About Margaretenfest
Margaretenfest — edition 2026
Why the festival is cancelled in 2026
The municipality of Margetshöchheim has officially announced that the Margaretenfest 2026 cannot take place. In February 2026, the second phase of the Mainlände development will begin – the Mainstraße between the town hall and Pointstraße will be completely redesigned. The approximately 18-month construction phase makes the usual festival grounds in the old town unavailable.
Comeback in 2027
For the village anniversary in 2027, the municipality plans the festive reopening of the new Mainstraße – and the Margaretenfest is intended to be part of this inauguration celebration. Current information is available on the community website.

The main festival of the Maintal community
The Margaretenfest Margetshöchheim has been a fixture in the Lower Franconian summer calendar for decades. The municipality of Margetshöchheim, located directly on the Main river, about 5 kilometers downstream from Würzburg, is the organizer. The festival traditionally transforms the Mainstraße – the historic main axis of the old town – into a festival mile with three days of celebration.
2026: Cancellation due to construction work on the Mainlände
For the year 2026, the residents of Margetshöchheim will have to do without their Margaretenfest. In February 2026, construction work on the second phase of the Mainlände development will begin – the Mainstraße between the town hall and Pointstraße will be completely redesigned. The construction phase is planned to last approximately 18 months, meaning the usual festival grounds in the old town will not be available.
Planned Reopening 2027
The good news: The new Mainstraße will be ceremonially inaugurated with the Margaretenfest for the village anniversary in 2027. The traditional festival will thus return in a more festive setting than ever before – as the reopening celebration of the renewed Main riverfront.
Margetshöchheim am Main
Margetshöchheim is a municipality with around 3,300 inhabitants in the Würzburg district (Lower Franconia, Bavaria). Its location on the Main river, its proximity to the university city of Würzburg, and its historic old town shape the community's identity and tourist profile. The Margaretenfest has become a symbol of identity over the past decades, and its cancellation in 2026 is perceived as a historic turning point.
