Traditional angler festival on the Main with Steckerlfisch, live music, and children's program
When the aroma of Steckerlfisch fills the air along the Main river in June, the Makrelenfest begins again in Veitshöchheim. The festival has been organized by the Anglerverein Veitshöchheim e.V. since 1962, and together with the Veitshöchheimer Carnevals Club since 1966. No other festival in Veitshöchheim has preserved its structure for so long as this small family festival on the Main. It is one of the oldest club festivals in the Würzburg district.
The centerpiece is the grilled Steckerlfisch – traditionally mackerel – complemented by fried fish, fish rolls, bratwurst, and other culinary specialties. On Sunday morning, the Weißwurst breakfast is a fixed part of the program. Drinks range from Veitshöchheim's own Frankenwein to Bavarian beer.
The venue is the festival grounds next to the Mainfrankensäle on the banks of the Main river – the ideal setting for an angler festival. The atmosphere is warm and very regional, more of a local gathering than a large event. A bouncy castle is available for children on all three days. Live music in the festival tent on Saturday and Monday evenings provides the entertainment.
Veitshöchheim is primarily known for its Rococo Garden and the summer palace of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. The town is located about 7 kilometers north of Würzburg in the Main valley and is part of the Franconian wine region – an ideal day trip for visitors who want to combine the Makrelenfest with the palace gardens and a boat trip on the Main.
The 62nd edition of the Makrelenfest will take place from Saturday, June 6, to Monday, June 8, 2026. The organizers are the Anglerverein Veitshöchheim e.V. and the Veitshöchheimer Carnevals Club 1966 e.V.. The dates correspond to the traditional Whit weekend, with Whit Monday marking the festival's conclusion.
As every year, Steckerlfisch, fried fish, fish rolls, and hearty bratwurst will be offered on the festival grounds. On Whit Sunday, the festival begins in the morning with a Weißwurst breakfast.
The exact music schedule will be published shortly before the festival on the Anglerverein website.
