Annual festival for democracy and urban society
KOSMOS Chemnitz is not a classic cultural festival: the festival sees itself as a workshop for democracy, a networking platform for civil society groups, associations, initiatives, and citizens of the city. It originated in 2019 as a response from the city society to the events of the summer of 2018 in Chemnitz — and has since become the most visible symbol of the change the city is undergoing.
The program includes five main areas: Music, Society, Art, Sport, and Economy. Specifically, this means a mix of live concerts by local and national acts, open talk rounds on topics such as migration, climate, or East German identity, participatory art projects, hands-on sports activities, and an innovation area. Admission is free, and the festival is explicitly intended for everyone.
Until 2025, the festival took place around the Schlossteich in the Schloßchemnitz district — a green island in the middle of the city. With the 2026 edition, the concept changes: the festival expands spatially, using decentralized satellite locations for the first time and extending across Hartmannplatz, Schmidtbankpassage, Kaßbergauffahrt, the street 'An der Markthalle', Fabrikstraße, and the Hartmannfabrik with the surrounding schools, halls, and green spaces. The question for the 2026 festival year is: 'How do we want to live in the future?'
After 2025 — when Chemnitz was the European Capital of Culture — KOSMOS 2026 sees itself as a bridging year. The festival carries forward the energy and international echo of the Capital of Culture year and transforms it into a permanently sustainable structure for the city society. With 115,000 visitors in 2025 alone, KOSMOS is now the largest citizen festival in Saxony — and one of the few large-scale events that are explicitly political without being partisan.
After 115,000 visitors in 2025, KOSMOS is embarking on a new chapter in 2026: for the first time, the festival leaves the Schlossteich and extends across Hartmannplatz, Schmidtbankpassage, Kaßbergauffahrt, the street 'An der Markthalle', Fabrikstraße, and the Hartmannfabrik with the surrounding schools, halls, and green spaces. In terms of content, pop culture, art, discourse, and participation are at the forefront, organized into five focus areas: Music, Society, Art, Sport, and Economy.
The festival sees itself in 2026 as a 'new chapter' after the Capital of Culture year, further utilizing the networks and infrastructure established in 2025. Admission is free; the full program will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on kosmos-chemnitz.de.
Daily artist and talk program available on kosmos-chemnitz.de and via the festival app.
