Traditional spring fair with Saxony Fire for Walpurgis Night and fireworks display
With over 16 days of operation, the Chemnitz Fair is one of the largest spring Volksfeste in Eastern Germany. For decades, it has been held on Richard-Hartmann-Platz (short for "Hartmannplatz") in the heart of Chemnitz city center β named after the famous locomotive builder Richard Hartmann, whose works shaped the industrial history of the city. In 2026, the fair runs from April 25 to May 10.
Classics and new highlights stand side-by-side: Top-Spin, the "Beach-Monster" giant octopus, Music Express, giant chain carousel, dodgems, haunted houses, carousels for the youngest visitors. Plus shooting galleries, lottery stalls, and food stands with bratwurst, almonds, cotton candy, crΓͺpes, and Saxon specialties. Open daily from 2 PM (on May 1 from 11 AM).
The Saxony Fire is a standalone highlight embedded in the fair's program. For Walpurgis Night on April 30, 2026 β this time in its 20th anniversary edition β the fair transforms into a spectacular stage from 6 PM: Bengal fire effects, a fire show, and live music by the band Rockpiraten accompany the traditional witch's bonfire. The Saxony Fire has become a firm fixture in Saxony's spring calendar.
On May 3 (Sunday), the Drambambala children's festival invites you to the fair from 2 PM to 7 PM β with bouncy castles, painting stations, and many hands-on activities. On the family days April 29 and May 6, there are discounts on rides. The grand finale is the spectacular fireworks display on Saturday, May 9, which illuminates the Chemnitz sky in the evening. On Mondays, May 1 and May 4, the fairground is extended by a large flea market.
Chemnitz, Saxony's third-largest city, was the European Capital of Culture in 2025. Hartmannplatz is centrally located in the Zentrum district, in direct proximity to the main train station. Visitors to the fair can combine their visit with a stroll through the "Kunst-Quartier" (Art Quarter) or the Karl Marx Monument.
