Traditional village kirmes on the first weekend of August in the Saarlouis district
Schmelz lies in the transition between the Saarlouis and St. Wendel districts, in one of the hilliest regions of Saarland. The Bettingen district — one of seven Schmelz districts — cultivates an independent local culture with an active club scene. The Bettinger Kirmes is its annual highlight and has been held on the first weekend of August for generations.
The program follows the proven Saarland kirmes pattern: Friday from 6 p.m. opening with a live band or DJ in the festival tent, Saturday from 3 p.m. full kirmes operation with amusement rides (carousel, Bayern-Schiff, shooting gallery), Sunday from 2 p.m. high mass, morning pint, and family program. Local clubs such as Sportclub Bettingen, the fire department, and the music club are responsible for catering and hospitality.
Instead of anonymous event catering, local clubs take care of food and drinks themselves: homemade bratwurst from the Bettingen butcher, Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck) over the fire, "Hoorische" (Saarland potato dumplings), Lyonerteller (a type of sausage plate), fries, cocktail bar run by the sports youth. The proceeds go to club activities, youth development, and the preservation of traditions.
The traditional highlight is Kirmes Sunday: 10 a.m. high mass in the Catholic parish church, followed by a morning pint with the music club at the marketplace, lunch at the club stalls, coffee and cake in the afternoon, and a dance evening in the festival tent. The atmosphere is familial and focuses on the essentials — meeting, good food, music.
Schmelz-Bettingen is part of a Saarland kirmes calendar that offers a different village festival almost every weekend from May to October. Those vacationing in the region during the summer can hike from one home festival to another, experiencing the full diversity of Saarland's folk festival culture.
