A Historic Mill as a Cultural Hub
The Bettinger Mühle in Schmelz – today a cultural center, once a watermill – is a technical monument of Saarland and has been maintained for decades by the "Verein zur Erhaltung der Bettinger Mühle e. V." (Association for the Preservation of the Bettinger Mühle). The mill grounds in the Bettingen district are picturesquely situated on the Hostenbach, amidst a mix of forest and meadow – the ideal backdrop for an artisan market.
30th Edition – A Saarland Market with Tradition
The artisan market has been held since 1997 and celebrates its 30th edition in 2026. What began as a small club market almost three decades ago has become one of the most important artisan events in Saarland today, attracting thousands of visitors annually from Saarland, the Saarschleifenland, Lorraine, and the Palatinate.
Over 100 Exhibitors and Live Demonstrations
More than 100 artisans showcase their skills: sculptural and functional ceramics, pottery, concrete and garden objects, sculptures made of wood, metal, and stone, unique glass pieces, textile and leather goods, bags, wind chimes, watercolor and acrylic paintings, paper and decoupage works, as well as unique jewelry. Some exhibitors demonstrate their working techniques live – visitors can watch the artists at work.
"Junge Kunst" – Promoting Young Talent
A special hallmark of the Bettinger Market is the "Junge Kunst" (Young Art) category: children and teenagers between 8 and 18 years old can exhibit for free and receive feedback from established artists. This promotion of young talent makes the market an important place for artistic socialization in Saarland.
Mill Bread, Café, and Saarland Atmosphere
Fresh mill bread baked in the historic stone oven is offered on Saturdays. The mill association's café serves homemade cakes and coffee, and food stalls offer Saarland specialties. Those looking for a complete weekend getaway can combine the market with hikes in the Schmelz surroundings (premium hiking trail "Litermont-Sagenweg").
