Traditional Kirchweih in the Palatinate wine village of Meckenheim on the first weekend of September with Kerwe customs, wine service, and Palatinate cuisine
The Kirchweih — the Kerwe in Palatinate dialect — is the highlight of the Palatinate village year. It dates back to the patron saint's day of the respective local church and is today much more than a religious festival: it is a community celebration, a meeting point for those returning home, a stage for local clubs, and an occasion for all the customs that have evolved around the Kirchweih over the centuries. In Meckenheim, this tradition is lovingly maintained.
The venue is the central Kerwe square, where the stands of the clubs, the wine service of the Meckenheim vintners, and the stage for the evening program are set up. The opening takes place on Friday evening with the setting up of the Kerwe tree — a firm ritual that symbolizes the connection between the village, its patron saint, and its tradition.
The Meckenheim vintners serve their wines from the surrounding vineyards — Riesling, Weissburgunder, Rosé wines, Spätburgunder, Sekt. The clubs offer classic Palatinate specialties: Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Flammkuchen, Pfälzer Wurstsalat — everything that belongs to a proper Palatinate Kerwe.
On Kerwe Sunday, locals and guests meet for Frühschoppen, often accompanied by brass music. In the evening, dance music is played on stage. Kerwe Monday — the traditional "blue Monday" in the Palatinate — is a special day in the festival calendar: quieter than the weekend, but with more time for conversations and a cozy end in the late evening.
The 2026 edition follows the proven Kerwe dramaturgy: Friday opening at 6 PM with the setting up of the Kerwe tree, full operation on Saturday and Sunday, Frühschoppen on Kerwe Sunday, and the festival winding down on the "blue" Kerwe Monday.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
