About Stadelhofener Kärwa

In the Franconian village of Stadelhofen, on the edge of the Franconian Switzerland, the local community celebrates its traditional Kirchweih (church consecration festival) in mid-August – called „Kärwa“ here. With the Kirwabaum (Maypole) being erected on the eve, a festive church service on the patron saint's day, and the ceremonial „Austanzen“ (dance-out) by the Kirwapaare (festival couples) in traditional costume, the Stadelhofener Kärwa is a living example of Upper Franconian folk culture, honouring the parish's patron saint for centuries.

What is a Franconian Kärwa?

The Kirchweih – „Kärwa“ or „Kirwa“ in Franconian dialect – is one of the most important village festivals in Upper Franconia. Originally, it commemorates the consecration of the respective parish church; over the centuries, this has evolved into a three-day festival that involves the entire village community. In Stadelhofen, a village of 1,000 inhabitants in the Bamberg district, the Kärwa is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday after August 10th.

The Kirwabaum

The centrepiece of every Franconian Kärwa is the Kirwabaum – a decorated spruce tree erected on the village square on Saturday afternoon by the young men of the village. The trunk is adorned with colourful ribbons, wreaths, and signs; sometimes small wooden figures from village life are hung among them. The tree remains standing throughout the Kärwa and is the symbol of the festival.

The Austanzen

The highlight of the Kärwa is the traditional Austanzen on Sunday: The Kirwapaare – the Kirwabou'n (young men) in dark traditional costume and the Kirwamoidla (young women) in Dirndl dresses – dance in a circle under the Kirwabaum. One of the couples holds a bouquet of flowers; when a bell rings, the bouquet is passed to the next couple. Whoever holds it when the last bell tolls is appointed the Oberkirchweihpaar (head festival couple) – an honour celebrated by the entire village.

Stadelhofen – Gateway to Franconian Switzerland

Stadelhofen belongs to the Steinfeld administrative community in the Bamberg district and lies at the transition to Franconian Switzerland – a karst landscape with castles, caves, and rock formations, considered one of the most beautiful low mountain regions in Bavaria. In the entire municipality of Stadelhofen, numerous Kirchweihen take place throughout the year: Wotzendorf, Steinfeld, Hohenhäusling, Pfaffendorf, Eichenhüll, Schederndorf, Wölkendorf – each village has its own festival.

Gastronomy and Atmosphere

In the festival tent or inn, you can enjoy Hausmacher Wurscht (homemade sausages), Schäuferla (pork shoulder roast), Franconian bratwurst, Sauerbraten (marinated roast beef), and the traditional Kirwa-Krapfen (doughnuts). The drinks served are Upper Franconian beers – Stadelhofen is located in the middle of the „region with the highest brewery density in the world“, and many breweries from the neighbourhood serve their brews. The Kärwa is accompanied musically by a brass band during the day and by a dance band for younger guests in the evening.

A Village Festival That Keeps Tradition Alive

In times when many village festivals are disappearing, the Stadelhofener Kärwa is one of the vibrant festivals supported by young people. The Kirwagesellschaft (festival committee) – usually the young adults of the village – organises it on a voluntary basis, taking care of erecting the pole, the dancing, and the setup and dismantling. Anyone who has experienced it understands why a Franconian Kärwa is much more than just a Volksfest (folk festival).

Stadelhofener Kärwa — edition 2026

The Stadelhofener Kärwa will be officially celebrated on Sunday, August 16th, 2026 – the patron saint's day of the parish church. The Kirwabaum is traditionally erected on the eve (Saturday, August 15th), and the Austanzen takes place on Sunday afternoon on the village square. The event is framed by a three-day festival with a festive church service, Franconian festival cuisine, and a dance evening until Monday evening.
