Kirta Sunday with Duck and Goose Feast on the Sudelfeld
The Kirchweih-Sonntag on the Speck-Alm – in local Bavarian dialect, Kirta-Sonntag – is one of the most beautiful culinary tradition days in the Upper Bavarian Mangfall Mountains. The Speck-Alm is located on the Oberes Sudelfeld above Bayrischzell, in the district of Miesbach, and opens its doors on Kirchweih-Sonntag from 10 am for a large duck and goose feast.
The centerpiece of the day is the large duck and goose feast: crispy roasted duck and young goose from the Alm's own kitchen, classically accompanied by red cabbage, dumplings, and dark gravy. For starters, there are soups from the hut, followed by homemade sweet pastries in the afternoon. Draft beer and apple juice from the scattered orchards of the Mangfall Valley round off the offerings.
The Mondschein Duo provides the musical accompaniment with traditional Bavarian inn music. Those who wish can dance between the tables, while others simply sit on the terrace overlooking the Sudelfeld and the mountains of the Mangfall range. The Speck-Alm is a pasture for hikers with a classic Alpine atmosphere – not artificial, but grown.
Bayrischzell is one of Germany's oldest winter sports regions and home to the Sudelfeld ski area. The Oberes Sudelfeld – beyond the pass height towards Oberaudorf – is a particularly scenic alpine pasture landscape in the Mangfall Mountains. In autumn, when the larches glow golden, the combination of mountain autumn and Kirta-Sonntag is particularly impressive. The festival is embedded in a whole series of Upper Bavarian Kirchweih-Sonntage, each celebrated differently in every parish – the Speck-Alm Kirta is one of the best-known examples of the alpine, gastronomically influenced variant.
