About Speck-Alm Kirchweih

The Kirchweih-Sonntag (Church consecration Sunday) on the Speck-Alm is a particularly beautiful Upper Bavarian Kirta tradition: On the Oberes Sudelfeld above Bayrischzell, Kirchweih-Sonntag is celebrated with a large duck and goose feast, traditional inn music, and a day on the alpine pasture in the Mangfall Mountains. The Mondschein Duo provides the musical accompaniment, and the Alm is open from 10 am. A mountain cuisine between hiking tradition and Alpine customs with views of the Wendelstein and Mangfall mountains.

Kirta Sunday on the Speck-Alm

The Kirchweih-Sonntag on the Speck-Alm – in local Bavarian dialect, Kirta-Sonntag – is one of the most beautiful culinary tradition days in the Upper Bavarian Mangfall Mountains. The Speck-Alm is located on the Oberes Sudelfeld above Bayrischzell, in the district of Miesbach, and opens its doors on Kirchweih-Sonntag from 10 am for a large duck and goose feast.

What's on the Menu

The centerpiece of the day is the large duck and goose feast: crispy roasted duck and young goose from the Alm's own kitchen, classically accompanied by red cabbage, dumplings, and dark gravy. For starters, there are soups from the hut, followed by homemade sweet pastries in the afternoon. Draft beer and apple juice from the scattered orchards of the Mangfall Valley round off the offerings.

Music with the Mondschein Duo

The Mondschein Duo provides the musical accompaniment with traditional Bavarian inn music. Those who wish can dance between the tables, while others simply sit on the terrace overlooking the Sudelfeld and the mountains of the Mangfall range. The Speck-Alm is a pasture for hikers with a classic Alpine atmosphere – not artificial, but grown.

Sudelfeld, Bayrischzell, and the Mangfall Mountains

Bayrischzell is one of Germany's oldest winter sports regions and home to the Sudelfeld ski area. The Oberes Sudelfeld – beyond the pass height towards Oberaudorf – is a particularly scenic alpine pasture landscape in the Mangfall Mountains. In autumn, when the larches glow golden, the combination of mountain autumn and Kirta-Sonntag is particularly impressive. The festival is embedded in a whole series of Upper Bavarian Kirchweih-Sonntage, each celebrated differently in every parish – the Speck-Alm Kirta is one of the best-known examples of the alpine, gastronomically influenced variant.

What to Expect

  • Large duck and goose feast from the Alm kitchen
  • Classic Bavarian side dishes: dumplings, red cabbage, dark gravy
  • Homemade sweet pastries in the afternoon
  • Live music with the Mondschein Duo
  • Mountain panorama of the Sudelfeld and the Mangfall Mountains
  • Authentic Upper Bavarian Alm atmosphere on a Kirta-Sonntag
