A Franconian Kirchweih with Depth
Schwebheim is located about ten kilometers southwest of Schweinfurt in the Franconian Maintal valley. The Schwamer Kärm is the central Kirchweih of the municipality and traditionally falls on the 3rd or 4th weekend in September. With Thursday's 'Schnickerles-Essen', Friday's 'Leberklöß-Essen', the raising of the Kirchweihbaum on Saturday, the festive service and village dances on Sunday, and the grand festival round on Monday, the Kärm covers the classic Lower Franconian Kirchweih repertoire completely.
Plan and Fichtenbursch
The organizers of the Kirchweih are the Plan — the young men of the village who organize the festival — and the Fichtenbursch. They are responsible for erecting the Planbaum (the Schwebheim Kirchweihbaum) on Saturday afternoon — in the old tradition, exclusively with muscle power and simple tools, without a crane. This makes the erection one of the biggest moments of spectacle at the Kärm.
Franconian Village Dances
On Kirchweih Sunday from 1:30 PM, the Plan couples in traditional costume open the Franconian village dances on the Plan: Walzer, Rheinländer, Schottisch, and Dreher are danced to live music by the band. Afterwards, the dance floor opens to all guests — a custom that is still kept alive in this form in only a few Lower Franconian villages today.
Festival Parade and Bürgerball
In addition to the village dances, the Schwamer Kärm includes a festival parade of the clubs, the Schwebheim Bürgerball as a social highlight, the Kirchweih sermon (locally maintained as a humorous verse ritual), and the Frühschoppen with the music band. On festival Monday, the couples, accompanied by musicians, go from house to house before returning to the Plan.
Schnickerles and Leberklöß
Culinary, the Kärm is a concentrate of Franconian tavern cuisine: Schnickerles-Essen (offal dish) on Thursday, Leberklöß on Friday, later Bratwurst, Schweinshaxe, and of course the Planwein. The local restaurateurs and TSV 04 Schwebheim share the catering. A Nachkirchweih on the last weekend of September extends the festival for regular guests.
