About Felliner Kirchweih

The Kirchweih in Fellen is one of the most peculiar and best-documented Kerwa traditions in the Spessart and Sinngrund regions. On Kirchweih Sunday, young men in white linen shirts with pitchforks march to the Herrenberg to 'fetch' the Kirchweih cake—a tradition that has survived in this form almost nowhere else in Lower Franconia. The 'Plotzburschen' take the main role: the youngest lads of the school-leaving year who erect the 'Kirbma' (Kirchweih tree, a decorated spruce with a wreath and ribbons), parade from house to house with the music band on Kirchweih Monday, and collect money for the musicians. In the evening, it's time for the Kirchweih dance in the Haas hall—a Kerwa known throughout the Burgsinn administrative district.

A Kerwa That Has Preserved Its Customs

Fellen is a small village in the Main-Spessart district, within the Burgsinn administrative community, nestled in a quiet and dreamy side valley of the Sinngrund. First documented in 1226, the village still thrives today on agriculture, tourism, and a strong network of local clubs. The Felliner Kirchweih is the highlight of the village year and one of the few Spessart Kerwen whose customs are passed down with meticulous detail—it is documented in the official customs collection of the Burgsinn administrative community as well as listed on fraenkische-kirchweih.de.

'Fetching the Kirchweih' on Herrenberg

On Kirchweih Sunday, young men in white linen shirts march up the Herrenberg hill above the village. Each carries a pitchfork (Heugabel) on which a Kirchweih cake is impaled. They return to the village with these speared cakes—the custom is called 'fetching the Kirchweih' and symbolizes that the festival has now officially arrived in the village. Over 100 years ago, the 'Kirbma'—the Kirchweih tree, a decorated spruce with a wreath and colorful ribbons—was erected in the middle of the village in a stone-bordered square; today, it stands next to the inn.

The Plotzburschen — The Youngest School Leavers as Main Actors

The 'Plotzburschen' (also called Platz- or Planburschen) play a leading role in the Kerwa. These are the lads who have left school in the current year—thus, the youngest bachelors of the year. They fetch the 'Kirbma', decorate it, erect it, and manage the further course of the festival. On Kirchweih Monday, the music band, accompanied by the Plotzburschen, goes from house to house, plays a serenade in front of each property, and collects money for the musicians. In the evening, the 'Plotzburschen and -schicksen' (the youngest girls of the year) lead the Kirchweih dance in the Haas hall—they are the main actors of the festival.

The Haas Hall and the Felliner Dance Evening

The dance in the Haas hall is the social highlight of the Felliner Kerwa. Here, the Plotzburschen meet their dance partners, here the festival is passed on to the next generation, and here the multi-day Kerwa only ends late at night. The Kerwa has become an anchor of identity in Fellen—it is documented and promoted as a demonstrative custom by the Burgsinn administrative community, the Sinngrundallianz, and fraenkische-kirchweih.de.

Felliner Kirchweih — edition 2026

The exact date of the Felliner Kirchweih 2026 will be announced a few weeks before the festival on village notice boards and via the Burgsinn administrative community. The traditional sequence is expected: 'Kirchweih holen' on Sunday with pitchforks and Kirchweih cake from Herrenberg, Kirbma erection by the Plotzburschen, and dance in the Haas hall on Sunday and Monday evenings.

The Kirchweih in Fellen follows a decades-old sequence of customs that does not change: On Kirchweih Sunday, the Plotzburschen, in white linen shirts, march to the Herrenberg with pitchforks, impale the prepared Kirchweih cake there, and thus 'fetch' the Kerwa back to the village. The Kirbma—a decorated spruce with a wreath and colorful ribbons—is already erected next to the inn at this time.

On Kirchweih Monday, the music band, together with the Plotzburschen, parades from house to house, plays serenades in front of each property, and collects money for the musicians. In the evening, Plotzburschen and Plotzschicksen lead the Kirchweih dance in the Haas hall. The exact date for 2026 will be communicated locally a few weeks before the festival.
