The event kicks off with tower brass players sending festive sounds from the Kreuzkirche's bell tower across the neighborhood. At 2:00 PM, an ecumenical service, led by the Dudweiler/Herrensohr parish team, opens the market. First-grade schoolchildren present poems and short musical pieces and are surprised by St. Nicholas. Afterward, the market is open until 10:00 PM – featuring brass choirs, choral singing, and a program focused on community rather than stage spectacles.

A diverse selection awaits you at the stalls: classics like bratwurst, tarte flambée, and Dibbelabbes (a potato dish) meet sweet treats like crêpes and stick bread. Warm drinks are provided – mulled wine, children's punch, hot chocolate, and Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine with rum) are available. In the heated indoor spaces of the Kreuzkirche and the adjacent community centers, you'll find stalls with handmade jewelry, knitwear, woodwork, and Advent decorations.

The market originated in the mid-1970s as an initiative by local clubs and gradually grew into a fixture on the Saarland Advent calendar. With its 47th edition in 2025, it is one of the oldest continuously held Advent markets in the Saarbrücken district; only the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 interrupted the series. Since 2016, the market has been set up directly around the Kreuzkirche, further enhancing the cozy atmosphere. The event is a flagship of OIV Herrensohr e.V. and an integral part of what residents call the "Herrensohr way of life.".

The market always takes place on the Saturday before the first Advent and lasts only one day – making a concentrated Advent visit all the more worthwhile. Free admission.
