Concert Series with Tradition in Saarbrücken's Herrensohr District
The Abendmusik in der Kreuzkirche Herrensohr is one of the most reliable classical music venues in the Saarbrücken region. For years, the Protestant Parish of Fischbach-Sulzbachtal has invited guests to a concert every first Friday of the month in the simple, acoustically excellent Kreuzkirche in the north of Saarbrücken. In 2026, the series will reach its 80th edition – a remarkable run for a neighbourhood church.
Variety of Programmes from Organ, Vocal Music, and Chamber Music
The programme changes from month to month and covers the entire spectrum of classical music. Organ concerts featuring works by Buxtehude, Bach, and Tunder are scheduled, as are song recitals with international singers, chamber music evenings with violin and cello, or thematic concerts from Iceland, Argentina, and Central Europe. The series regularly features prizewinners of the International Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition from Saarbrücken on its gallery.
The Kreuzkirche Herrensohr
The Kreuzkirche is located at Johannesstraße 33 in the Herrensohr district, which belongs to the Saarbrücken district of Dudweiler. The Protestant parish church is a classical space with good acoustics, ideally suited for intimate classical evenings. Admission is free; a collection for church music is requested at the exit.
Who Performs Here
In recent months, performers have included organist Štefan Iľaš (February 2026), Japanese organist Mio Kuriyama from Leipzig (May 2026), the duo Kamil Zawadzki (violin) and Paweł Mirowski (cello) in June 2026, and Icelandic soprano María Sól Ingólfsdóttir with Argentine pianist Melisa Cingolani in March 2026. The musical range thus extends from the Baroque organ to contemporary international vocal art.
Who Should Visit
Anyone who wants to experience high-quality classical music away from the major concert halls of Saarland will find it here. The series is a hidden gem for those who want to discover Saarbrücken's culture beyond the city centre – and at the same time proof that church music life in the districts is vibrant. A visit is particularly recommended on Fridays with organ programmes, when the acoustics of the church space are fully showcased.
