Open-air weekend in the Stadtpark for the 55th club anniversary
The bagpipe (Schalmei) is a classic woodwind instrument with a double reed, holding a special folk music tradition in the Saarland and Palatinate regions. Bagpipe bands — often comprising 10 to 30 players — have been an integral part of the Saarland's club landscape for over a hundred years, performing at carnivals, local festivals, and Christmas markets. The Dudweiler Bagpipe and Cultural Association e.V. — founded in 1971 — is one of the most traditional associations of its kind in Saarbrücken's Dudweiler district.
With around 21,000 inhabitants, Dudweiler is one of Saarbrücken's largest districts and was incorporated in 1974 after a long period of independence. Dudweiler Stadtpark — a green oasis within the district — is the venue for many club festivals, choir festivals, and summer events. It is here that the bagpipe association celebrates its 55th anniversary.
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the anniversary weekend kicks off in the early afternoon with the opening of the festival grounds. Local clubs — fire brigade, sports club, cultural association — will provide food with classic Saarland dishes: Schwenkbraten (marinated pork neck), Bratwurst (sausage), Lyoner (type of sausage), and fries. From 7 PM, the party band PARTYEXPRESS takes the stage — a well-known regional cover band with a broad repertoire of Schlager, pop, and rock.
Sunday, June 7, 2026 — the actual anniversary day. After lunch, the host bagpipe association and friendly bagpipe and music associations from the region will perform. The day is dedicated to the Saarland folk music tradition and club community. Friendly associations from Saarland, the Palatinate, and Lorraine often travel by bus.
Those who perceive bagpipe music merely as a folk music cliché should listen closely here: the regional bagpipe bands have their own unique sound, incomparable to Bavarian brass music or the Bremen Town Musicians. The anniversary offers a rare opportunity to experience several bagpipe bands on one stage — a concentrated piece of Saarland's local culture.
The 2026 anniversary festival is a unique edition for the club's 55th birthday. The detailed program will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival weekend on dudweiler-blog.de and the association's channels.
