About Kerb Baumholder

The Kerb in Baumholder is one of the oldest traditions of the small garrison town in the Birkenfeld district. For four days in September, the city center transforms into a fairground with rides, stage program, and the typical club catering that characterizes the region. The Kerb follows the classic schema of Westrich Kirchweih festivals: setting up the Kerwe tree, Kerwe sermon, dance evenings with cover bands and DJ sets, a family day on Sunday, and a final Kerwekehraus on Monday. The festival is designed for all generations – families, young people, and older residents alike find their place in the festive hustle and bustle.

The Kerb holds a special significance in the Westrich plateau. Unlike in the more densely populated wine-growing regions along the Rhine and Moselle, here it is not only a folk festival but also a central identity marker of a community where tradition and garrison history have been intertwined over generations. The Kerb Baumholder takes place in September in the city center and uses classic fairground areas around the downtown area.

The program follows the Westphalian-Westricher schema. Thursday or Friday opens with the Kerwe tree being set up by the Kerwe youth and the first dance night. Saturday is the big event day with a concert on the main stage and festival tent operations until the early morning hours. Sunday is dedicated to families: children's afternoon, performances by local clubs, possibly a festival parade. Monday traditionally marks the Kerwekehraus with the burial or burning of the Kerwe straw doll, live music, and the winding down of the festival tent. Rides such as bumper cars, carousels, and candy and snack stands provide a classic folk festival atmosphere.

Catering is traditionally in the hands of local clubs. Fire departments, sports clubs, and the Kerwe youth set up bratwurst and drink stands, ensuring that the value creation stays within the city. Admission is free. Those arriving by car will find several free parking spaces in the city center.
