Dudweiler Christmas Market

An almost 50-year tradition

The Dudweiler Christmas Market has existed since 1979 and has become a firm fixture in the Saarland Advent calendar. It is organised by the Verkehrsverein Dudweiler e.V. (VVD) — a community association that shapes local life in many areas. The 47th edition took place in 2025; the 48th edition is expected for 2026.

Change of venue: From the market square to the city park

Until 2022, the market traditionally took place on Dudweiler's market square. Due to requests from residents and associations, it moved to the Dudweiler City Park on Klosterstraße starting in 2023. The park offers more space for stalls, Christmas lights, and the event stage. The atmosphere under the old trees is more intimate and atmospheric than the open market square setting — a change that has proven successful.

The association stalls

Over 20 stalls are mainly run by Dudweiler associations — a classic Saarland setup where club life supports the event. On offer:

• Christmas gift and decorative items
• Advent wreaths, fir branches, candles
• Local crafts
• Mulled wine, punch, non-alcoholic hot drinks
• Saarland specialities — Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), Lyoner (sausage), Bratwurst (sausage)
• Sweets — gingerbread, almonds, crêpes
• Book stalls and association activities

Typical program

The market classically spans one day (Saturday of the 2nd Advent weekend) with the following highlights:

• 2:00 PM — Opening by the district mayor and the VVD board
• 2:15 PM — Christmas concert by the Dudweiler Pipe and Culture Association
• All afternoon — Christmas music from the park stage, stalls open
• 6:00 PM — Visit from St. Nicholas with gifts for children
• Evening — Concert or DJ set, mulled wine, and a cosy atmosphere
• 9:00 PM–9:30 PM — Market closes

Dudweiler — A Saarbrücken district with its own history

The district of Dudweiler was an independent town with almost 25,000 inhabitants until the administrative reform in 1974. Today it is part of the state capital Saarbrücken, but it retains its own identity, its own associations, its own market square, and its own history. The Christmas market is an expression of this continued independence — a district festival not organised by the central Saarbrücken city administration, but emerging from the district itself.

The Dudweiler Christmas Market is one of numerous Advent events in the Saarbrücken regional association — alongside it, there is the large Saarbrücken Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Market) on St. Johanner Markt, and smaller district markets in Brebach, St. Arnual, and Burbach. Dudweiler positions itself as the charming and cosy district market through its city park location and its strong association roots.
