Eighth Edition — Juggling and Street Circus in the Renaissance Fortress
The Zitadelle Spandau is one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe. Built between 1559 and 1594 as a defensive structure against invading Swedish troops, it now houses the Spandau City History Museum, the Gallery for City History Themes, a concert hall (Bastionssaal), and several banquet halls. The inner courtyard — framed by the four massive bastions and the 800-year-old Julius Tower — has been the venue for open-air events for years.
The Juggling Festival at the Zitadelle is a specialized sister event to the Gauklerspiel (which takes place on the same days, organized by Carnica Spectaculi). While the Gauklerspiel focuses on medieval markets and general spectacle arts, the Juggling Festival focuses more narrowly on juggling as a discipline — with professional acts, occasional workshops, and a clearly curated program. 2026 marks its 8th edition.
Juggler and street artists will perform on several performance spots in the inner courtyard and on the ramparts: club juggling, ball tossing, diabolo, devil sticks, stilt walkers, acrobatics with hoops, Cyr wheel, fire performance at dusk. Walk-acts will wander through the grounds, surprising visitors with mini-performances. The acts come from across Germany and occasionally from other European countries.
What makes the festival special is the setting. When acrobats juggle from the fortress walls or a stilt walker strides through the winding ramparts, it creates an atmospheric visual world that no open-air festival in the city center can match. At nightfall (around 6 PM in October), fire performances are particularly spectacular.
Spandau, Berlin's westernmost district, has preserved its own historical identity — many Spandau residents say they come from Spandau, not from Berlin. Visitors to the festival should take the time to explore the old town of Spandau afterwards — the Nikolaikirche, Carl-Schurz-Straße, the Spandau harbor.
The 8th edition confirms the format of previous years: a compact weekend with curated juggling acts at the Zitadelle Spandau. The organizer is the Zitadelle Spandau itself (a public museum of the State of Berlin in the Spandau district), and the festival is part of the fortress's growing programming as a cultural venue.
Exact stage assignments and act lists will be published shortly before the festival on the Zitadelle website. The acts for 2026 are not yet detailed — based on experience, 8–12 solo and duo acts will be engaged, plus 2–3 walk-acts.
