Traditional Midsummer bonfire in the northern Oberpfälzer Wald
The Johannisfeuer in Kirchendemenreuth is one of many small midsummer events that mark the transition from early to high summer in the villages of the northern Oberpfalz – specifically in the so-called Haberland region between Weiden and Erbendorf. The festival draws on the old tradition of Johannisfeuer (St. John's bonfires), which are celebrated around June 24th, the feast day of St. John the Baptist.
In Central Europe, Johannisfeuer bonfires are a hybrid of a Christian saint's festival and pre-Christian midsummer rituals. In some places, people jump through the fire; in others, the sparks are believed to protect the fields. In the Oberpfalz, the village festival is usually the main focus today: the fire serves as the occasion and focal point, around which neighbours, clubs, and families gather for beer, snacks, and conversation.
Kirchendemenreuth is a municipality in the Neustadt a.d.Waldnaab district within the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) administrative region. With around 1,400 inhabitants, it lies between Erbendorf and Weiden, nestled in the foothills of the Steinwald forest. The municipality sees itself as part of the regionally known 'Haberland', a small historical settlement area in the northern Oberpfalz.
The Johannisfeuer is a one-day village festival. It is officially listed as an annual traditional event in the Kirchendemenreuth municipality's event calendar. The programme consists of the bonfire itself and social gathering of the village community with catering provided by local clubs. By concept, the Johannisfeuer is not a tourist event but a village gathering in the traditional sense – those who attend are part of the local community or travel as interested guests from the surrounding area.
The 2026 Johannisfeuer follows the centuries-old tradition of midsummer bonfires around the feast day of St. John the Baptist (June 24th). In Kirchendemenreuth, the fire will be lit on Saturday, June 27, 2026 – Saturday falls close to the actual St. John's Day and is the usual day for the midsummer event in the village.
The programme focuses on the bonfire itself and the subsequent village community celebration. Local clubs will provide food and drinks; the exact start time in the evening will be announced on-site and on the municipal website.
The exact times for 2026 will be published by the municipality of Kirchendemenreuth a few days before the event on the official information channels.
