Marathon and Half Marathon through the Vineyards with Wine Tasting at the Aid Stations
In recent years, the Ahrathon has secured a firm place in the calendar of German experience marathons. Instead of being purely a sporting event, it is a mix of marathon, wine tasting, and festival. Starting from Weingut Sonnenberg, the routes lead up into the steep slopes of the Ahr Valley, through vineyards, along hiking trails, and past some of the valley's most spectacular viewpoints.
With 5, 12, 21, and 42 kilometers, the Ahrathon offers a spectrum ranging from family participation to the classic marathon. The shorter distances involve manageable elevation gains and are well-suited for beginners; the half marathon and marathon are aimed at more experienced runners and require sure-footedness in the vineyards.
The hallmark of the Ahrathon is its aid stations: at several points along the route, there are not only water, isotonic drinks, and bananas, but also small wine tastings from Ahr vintners. Those who wish can taste their way from one Pinot Noir to another through the valley without neglecting the athletic challenge. This symbiosis of sport and enjoyment defines the character of the event.
Following the races, an open-air evening event takes place at Weingut Sonnenberg: Rock & Wein with the bands BOOSTER and Ganz & Gar. Here, runners, their families, and festival guests mingle for a relaxed evening between the vineyards and the stage.
The distances start staggered in the morning, so all participants finish in the afternoon. The open-air program begins after the last finishers cross the line and is also accessible to day guests without a race number.
Exact start times per distance and the detailed program are available at ahrathon.de and marathon.de.
