Castle festival with knights, blacksmiths, and jugglers at one of Southern Germany's largest castles
Harburg Castle is one of the few medieval castle complexes in Germany that has been preserved in almost unchanged condition. Built in the 12th century by the Staufers, it has belonged to the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein for centuries. It is precisely this setting that makes the medieval market a special experience: castle walls, ramparts, the keep, and the castle chapel form an authentic stage.
Around a hundred stalls with arts and crafts are spread across the entire castle grounds – blacksmiths, glassblowers, leatherworkers, bow makers, tailors, dyers, wood sculptors. In addition, there are living history groups recreating everyday scenes from the Middle Ages: cooking over an open fire, weapons maintenance, medicinal herbs, games, and combat demonstrations. Sword fighters and knight tournaments show visitors how skilled in combat the Middle Ages really were.
Medieval music groups with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and drums perform on several stages and move through the market. Those who stay longer can experience camp life in the evening with campfires, torches, and relaxed socializing in an atmosphere that is rarely found with such density today.
Harburg is located in the district of Donau-Ries in Bavarian Swabia, directly at the transition between the Swabian Jura and the Ries crater. With Harburg Castle on the Romantic Road, Harburg has been a worthwhile stop between Donauwörth and Nördlingen for decades.
The 2026 edition of the medieval market at Harburg Castle will take place from Thursday, June 4th, to Sunday, June 7th, 2026. The organizers are Vehi Mercatus / Turba Events, who organize numerous medieval markets in Southern Germany.
Stalls with arts and crafts, camp life, combat demonstrations, and performances will be spread across the entire castle grounds. Program details – sword fight reenactments, music bands, jugglers – will be published by the organizer in good time before the event.
