Open-air culture festival on Saturday, June 20, 2026 in Wildeshausen — acrobatics, clowning, juggling, mask and stilt theatre with free admission
SpielART — the culture festival op de Geest is Wildeshausen's open-air performing arts festival. On Saturday, June 20, 2026, starting at 3 p.m., acrobats, clowns, jugglers, mask and stilt artists will transform Wildeshausen's city center into a stage. The audience strolls between the performance venues and experiences a form of street theatre that is one of the most unusual summer events in the region.
Free admission. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Wildeshausen. SpielART is part of the Wildeshausen Summer Culture 2026, with which the city marketing shapes the summer life of the city center from June to September.
Op de Geest refers to Wildeshausen's location on the Wildeshausen Geest — a historical landscape south of the Stederdorf High Moor. SpielART uses the central squares and streets of the old town as a stage for street theatre in the broadest sense. The concept is accessible: visitors move freely between the stations where the artists present their programs in a continuous rotation.
The artistic spectrum ranges from acrobatic floor and aerial acts to clowning and silent comedy, to virtuoso juggling. Mask theatre and stilt artists are also featured — disciplines that are rather rare in the traditional North German festival landscape and give SpielART its own profile.
SpielART is designed as a family festival. Most program elements are low-language or non-verbal and thus accessible to children and young people. The early start at 3 p.m. makes it possible to experience the festival in the afternoon and early evening with the whole family.
The event is organized by Stadtmarketing Wildeshausen, which is also responsible for other components of SommerKultur 2026 — SommerSound am Markt, Burgwiese-Konzerte, Thomanerchor concert in the Alexanderkirche, and Wild Rock Open Air. SpielART is one of the reliably well-attended summer events in the city.
The 2026 edition of SpielART — Kulturfest op de Geest will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in the city center of Wildeshausen. Starting at 3 p.m. — free admission. Acrobats, clowns, jugglers, and stilt artists will perform on the central squares and streets with programs in continuous rotation.
SpielART is part of the Wildeshausen Summer Culture 2026. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Wildeshausen.
The event format is designed as a station festival. Visitors move freely between several performance venues in the city center — Market Square, Hunte, Westerstraße, and other central squares. At each station, an artist or group performs, and the programs repeat throughout the afternoon and evening. This creates a strolling festival without fixed seating.
Acrobatics (floor and aerial acrobatics), clowning (classic and modern performance styles), juggling (balls, clubs, rings, fire), mask theatre, and stilt theatre are the five main disciplines for 2026. The artists come from the North German and supra-regional street theatre scene.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Market Square, Hunte, Westerstraße, and other central squares of the Wildeshausen Old Town. A flyer with stations and time slots will be distributed on site.
Free admission. Artist tip jars on site — voluntary donations welcome.
