One of Schleswig-Holstein's Oldest Open-Air Cinemas

Since 2000, the Mondscheinkino-Tönning e.V. association has been screening films over three summer evenings at the historic Packhaus in Tönning harbor. This makes the festival one of the longest-running open-air cinemas in Schleswig-Holstein. The setting is truly exceptional: the 18th-century Packhaus, with the Eider estuary and the characteristic marshlands of the North Frisia district as a backdrop.

Tönning – Harbor Town on the Eiderstedt Peninsula

For centuries, Tönning on the Eiderstedt peninsula was one of the most important ports along the Eider river. The historic Packhaus, dating back to 1783, stands as a testament to this past. Today, the small town is a popular destination for visitors to the Wadden Sea National Park and day-trippers alike—and the Mondscheinkino fits perfectly into the region's summer cultural calendar.

Character and Program

The program is curated anew each year, blending summer-friendly mainstream hits, classics, and independent productions. The association provides the technical equipment and sets up around 250 chairs; however, guests are welcome to bring their own low-backed garden chairs, blankets, and cushions. Advance ticket sales begin a few weeks before the first screening—available online via EventimLight (link at mondscheinkino-toenning.de) or locally at the Tourist Info and Boye Hamkens, both located at the market square in Tönning.

Self-Service with Charm

The concept thrives on a unique feature that embodies pure Nordic casualness: the audience is encouraged to bring their own low-backed chairs, blankets, and cushions. The Mondscheinkino team prepares homemade food for every film, carefully matched to the movie's theme, along with reasonably priced drinks. Each screening also features a special activity or game. The association donates to local organizations every year. When the moon rises over the Packhaus, the film begins—hence the name.
