Open-Air cinema at the historic Packhaus in Tönning harbour
Since 2000, the non-profit association Mondscheinkino Tönning e.V. has been showing films on three summer evenings at the historic Packhaus in Tönning harbour. This makes the festival one of the oldest continuously existing open-air cinemas in Schleswig-Holstein. The setting is extraordinary: the 18th-century Packhaus, behind it the Eider estuary with its typical marshland landscapes of the Nordfriesland district.
For centuries, Tönning on the Eiderstedt peninsula was one of the most important ports on the Eider river. The historic Packhaus from 1783 bears witness to this past. Today, the small town is an attraction for visitors to the Wadden Sea National Park and day-trippers – the Mondscheinkino fits seamlessly into the region's cultural summer calendar.
The programme is curated anew each year and mixes summer-friendly mainstream films, classics, and independent productions. The association provides the technical equipment (projector, screen, sound system), and advance ticket sales run for two weeks before the first film evening at the Tönning Tourist Information Centre and at Boye Hamkels in the town centre.
The concept is based on a special feature that is pure Nordic nonchalance: Spectators bring their own chairs, sofas, blankets, and cushions. A food truck and drinks stands provide refreshments; alternatives to mulled wine on warm summer nights include apple spritzer and a local Husum beer. When the moon rises over the Packhaus, the film begins – hence the name.
As since 2000, Mondscheinkino Tönning will again show films on three consecutive evenings on the first weekend of August 2026 at the historic Packhaus. The association confirms the traditional format: Thursday, August 6, Friday, August 7, and Saturday, August 8, 2026. Admission from 8 p.m., film start approx. 9:30 p.m.
The exact film titles and tariffs will traditionally be published by the association two weeks before the first film evening, i.e., around mid-July 2026 – via the website mondscheinkino-toenning.de and posters in Tönning's townscape. Advance ticket sales at the Tönning Tourist Information Centre (Am Markt) and Boye Hamkels in the town centre.
