Six days of contemporary Italian cinema at Kino in der Kulturbrauerei, Prenzlauer Berg
Berlin has traditionally had a close relationship with Italian cinema – not least through the Berlinale, which annually shows Italian films in competition. Outside of major festivals, however, Italian productions have a hard time in German cinemas: dubbing delays or prevents releases, original versions are rarely shown. The Italian Film Festival Berlin has been filling this gap since 2013 with a compact film week that exclusively shows Italian productions in the Italian original with subtitles (mostly English).
The 2026 edition is the 13th festival edition. Around ten competition films are planned – including several German premieres from the current Italian film year – complemented by a small retrospective and an Italian supporting program with Q&A sessions, culinary accents, and occasional guests from the film team. The selection is based on the major Italian festivals (Venice, Rome) and the David di Donatello nominations, supplemented by debuts and insider tips.
The venue is Kino in der Kulturbrauerei at Schönhauser Allee 36 in Prenzlauer Berg – a complex with eight screens in the historic area of the former Schultheiss brewery. The location between U-Bahn station Eberswalder Straße and U-Bahn station Senefelderplatz is easily accessible by U2 and tram lines. The cinema also offers a bar and foyer where film discussions and informal meetings take place after screenings – part of the festival atmosphere.
The films are shown in their original version with subtitles. Competition films usually start in the evening; the retrospective and special screenings are spread throughout the day. Tickets are sold per screening via Kino in der Kulturbrauerei; a festival pass for all competition films has been offered in limited quantities in recent years.
The 2026 edition continues the format of previous years: six days of contemporary Italian cinema in two to three of the Kulturbrauerei's eight screens. The selection will be announced at the end of summer / early autumn 2026, traditionally featuring films from the competitions in Venice, Rome, and from the David di Donatello nominations.
A focus of the 2026 edition, according to the organizers, is on 'subtle humor, joie de vivre, and sometimes direct realism' – keywords that have shaped the festival's profile for years. The festival has established itself as a fixture for the Italian community in Berlin and for an international Berlin film audience.
The exact program and films will be published from autumn 2026 via berlin.de and at Kino in der Kulturbrauerei. All films in Italian original version with subtitles.
