Colourful powder festival at the Horn racecourse
The Holi Festival of Colours is an international format that adopts the Indian tradition of Hanami: during spring celebrations, people throw colourful powder at each other as a symbolic liberation from conventions and hierarchies. In Germany, the format has become a firm fixture as a summer event — in Hamburg at the Horn racecourse, in the Horn district within Hamburg-Mitte.
The hourly "Big Throw" is the centrepiece: thousands of visitors throw powder into the air simultaneously, creating a giant rainbow over the festival. The event lasts a few seconds, but the effect is hypnotic — and this phenomenon is precisely why visitors travel here. Photo enthusiasts will find the most popular motif of the Hamburg summer festival season here.
The Horn racecourse in Hamburg has been one of Germany's most traditional horse racing venues since the 19th century. On Holi days, the expansive area is transformed into a festival site — the track itself, the central grandstand, and the surrounding green spaces are used for stages, powder stations, food trucks, and bars. The location in eastern Hamburg is easily accessible by U-Bahn (lines U2/U4 Horner Rennbahn) in 15 minutes from the main train station.
Alongside the colour powder, there is a continuous electronic music programme. National and international DJs play Electronic, Minimal, and House — the music is energetic without drifting into pure Eurodance. The festival deliberately maintains a musically serious approach, rather than reducing itself to a purely visual experience.
Minimum age 16 years (ID required). Only official, certified colour powder is permitted on the premises — €2.50 per pack at sales points or in advance with tickets. Changing clothes strongly recommended, as the powder stains fabrics. No outside food or drinks allowed — refreshments available from food trucks and bars.
The Horn district in Hamburg-Mitte is a residential area in the east of the Hanseatic city — characterised by single-family and multi-family houses, many parks, and the racecourse as its central landmark. The Holi Festival is one of the few major events in the district, utilising the racecourse infrastructure as an ideal open-air location.
Holifestival.com has confirmed the date. The format remains unchanged: racecourse as the stage, hourly Big Throws, continuous DJ programme, food trucks and bars on site. As in previous years, the DJ line-up will be published successively on the website in the weeks leading up to the festival.
