157th IDEE German Derby at Hamburg-Horn Racecourse
Since 1869, the IDEE German Derby has been held at the Hamburg-Horn Racecourse – Germany's most prestigious flat racing classic. The famous Mai-Pokal (May Cup) for 2,400 meters and €650,000 in prize money has been awarded 157 times; in 2026, another winner will join the ranks of Derby legends.
In 2026, the Hamburger Renn-Club is opting for a new, more compact format with four race days instead of the traditional five to seven-day meetings. The weekend focus concept aims for better accessibility for families and occasional racing fans:
The IDEE German Derby is a Group I race for three-year-old horses, run over 2,400 meters in the classic left-handed gallop. The prize money of €650,000 for the winner is among the highest in Europe. Winners will be etched into the history books of German horse racing – horses like Königsstuhl, Borgia, or Belenus are Derby myths.
The meeting also includes other classic Hamburg races, such as the Wettstar.de Großer Hansa-Preis and the Langer Hamburger. On Derby Day, highly endowed BBAG auction races will also be held, attracting professional horse breeders and equestrian enthusiasts from all over Europe.
The Derby-Meeting is also a fashion event: hats, summer dresses, straw hats, and suits define the scene. The grandstands fill with Hamburg senators, business leaders, and celebrities – the Derby weekend is a fixture on Hamburg's social calendar. Families take advantage of the Family Day on June 28, with reduced admission and a child-friendly program.
The racecourse is located in the Horn district of Hamburg-Mitte – east of the city center, nestled between the Horn and Billstedt districts. It is one of the few racecourses in Germany still situated within the city limits.
The 157th IDEE Derby-Meeting Hamburg will take place in a more compact format in 2026 with four race days:
The main race, the 157th IDEE German Derby, is a Group I race over 2,400 meters with €650,000 in prize money – Germany's most important horse race.
