About Bretzenheim Advent
The Bretzenheim Christmas Market is one of the most community-focused Christmas markets in Mainz's districts. Bretzenheim, one of Mainz's larger districts with around 18,000 inhabitants, is located in the south of the city between the university campus and Mainz-Lerchenberg and maintains an active club life with church connections.
The venue is St. Georg Church Square in the heart of Bretzenheim, where the Catholic parish church of St. Georg stands — a central meeting point for the district. The square has been expanded in recent years to provide more space for the growing market.
The market takes place on the second Advent weekend — Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6, 2026 — following the Gonsenheim Christmas Market a week earlier. The Bretzenheim market days have fixed opening hours: Saturday from 3 PM to 9 PM (extended opening with evening program), Sunday from 3 PM to 7 PM.
The market is jointly organized by the Bretzenheim clubs and the St. Georg parish. At the club stalls, you'll find typical Franconian and Rhenish Hessian Advent specialties: mulled wine and children's punch, bratwurst and steak from the grill, potato pancakes with apple sauce, crêpes, waffles, fries, homemade cookies, and stollen.
At the craft and art stalls, you'll find Advent wreaths, door wreaths, fir arrangements, arts and crafts by local artisans, handmade items from kindergartens and schools, Christmas tree ornaments, woodwork, and homemade jams.
The market is musically accompanied by Bretzenheim choirs, the brass ensemble of St. Georg Church, and Advent songs for sing-alongs on Sunday afternoon. The parish church also offers an open Advent sing-along on Saturday evening.
As with all district markets, the proceeds go towards club activities, youth support, the parish, and social projects in the district.

The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Saturday afternoon at 3 PM, market opening; during the first hours, family and children's program, from the evening, atmospheric lighting and brass concert in front of the church; Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, reopening, Advent songs for sing-alongs, closing at dusk around 7 PM.
