350 Years of Time Travel around Wolfstein Castle in the Bavarian Forest
The Historical Castle Festival Freyung is one of the largest historical festivals in the region. It is held every year on the first weekend of September around Wolfstein Castle, which towers high above Freyung in the Bavarian Forest. The town of Freyung organizes the festival together with historical groups, craftsmen, musicians, and associations from all over the region.
The reenactment takes the time of the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) as its reference point. Historical camps are set up in the castle courtyard, the adjacent forest garden, and on the surrounding meadows: Swedish troops set up quarters, market guards patrol the town, jugglers and musicians entertain the audience. An open camp with horses, campfires, and tents provides insight into daily life in the 17th century.
For three days, craftsmen demonstrate old techniques – blacksmithing, woodturning, basket weaving, leatherworking, bow making. Delicacy stalls offer historical foods, spices, herbs, and sweets. Birds of prey demonstrations, sword fighting demonstrations, and acrobatics provide athletic highlights. In the evening, a spectacular fire show follows each day – fire dancers and fire eaters under the starry sky.
A specially brewed unfiltered beer is produced for the festival days, along with Market Guard Wine – both exclusively available at the Castle Festival. Medieval dishes are served in the castle tavern: kettle goulash, suckling pig, bread platters, mead, and herb cheese.
Freyung is the district town of Freyung-Grafenau (Lower Bavaria, Bavaria), nestled in the Bavarian Forest near the Czech and Austrian borders. Wolfstein Castle, originally a 13th-century castle, underwent several renovations and is now home to the Hunting and Fishing Museum and the venue for the Castle Festival – amidst one of Bavaria's most wooded landscapes.
The town of Freyung and its partners create a vivid picture of the 17th century around Wolfstein Castle. The historical groups set up their camp in the adjacent forest garden, craftsmen and delicacy stalls line the path to the castle, and several theater performances take place in the castle courtyard.
Several times a day, a historical open-air play is performed in the castle courtyard – staged by amateur actors from the region, referencing significant events in local history.
