Culture, street food, and family program on Freyung's local mountain
Freyung is located in the Bavarian Forest, district of Freyung-Grafenau, on the Austrian border. The Geyersberg here is more than just a viewpoint: on the grounds of the former State Garden Show, the town has developed a three-part cultural landscape — with a large main stage, a carousel area, and the so-called Soundgarden. This structure forms the backbone of the Geyersberg Festival.
A central element is an international street food mile that stretches along the main axis of the grounds. Stalls from numerous cuisines — from Asian BBQs and Mediterranean classics to the Bohemian-Bavarian dumpling art of the Bavarian Forest — offer a diverse culinary selection that goes far beyond usual festival street food.
Live bands and acrobatics performances alternate on the main stage; a special highlight is the Flame Organ, a pyromusical sculpture that combines sound and fire. Puppet theater and marionette acts cater to the young audience, while the Soundgarden offers more electronic sounds away from the main tent.
Sunday is a classic family day: the Donikkl Crew performs their well-known children's songs, while graffiti workshops, a children's tattoo station, craft activities, and readings take place in parallel. The festival thus positions itself not as a purely adult festival, but as a broadly based family event.
Freyung is part of the core tourist area of the Bavarian Forest — alongside the National Park, Großer Arber, and the Glass Route. With the Geyersberg Festival, the town sets a modern cultural counterpoint to the region's traditional folk festivals (Volksfeste) and positions itself as a summer destination for guests from Passau, Linz, and the Czech Republic as well.
The 2026 edition continues the proven two-day concept: Saturday as a day with bands, acrobatics, and flame organ show, Sunday as a family day with children's program. The main stage, carousel area, and Soundgarden will be active simultaneously, in addition to the international street food mile.
The complete band lineup will be published by the organizer on derbergruft.eu in the weeks before the festival.
Further band confirmations and the exact stage program will follow on derbergruft.eu.
