A State Exhibition About Music

The Bavarian State Exhibition is the annual major cultural-historical exhibition of the House of Bavarian History. In 2026, it bears the title "Music in Bavaria" and takes place in the newly built TonYversum in Freyung – in the Freyung-Grafenau district, right in the heart of the Bavarian Forest (state of Bavaria). The exhibition tells the musical history of Bavaria as a musical journey through time from the Middle Ages to the present.

From Crumhorn to Jukebox

At the TonYversum, visitors encounter precious and curious originals – from the crumhorn to the jukebox. Soundscapes and interactive listening worlds make music history tangibly experienceable. The spectrum ranges from traditional folk music, classical music, world-class orchestras, and major festivals to punk, rock, pop, and musical cabaret.

199 Days of Live Music in the Region

The special feature: On all 199 exhibition days, live music will be heard throughout the entire region under the motto "This is how Bavaria sounds". Concerts, performances, or events take place daily – in inns, on market squares, in churches, or in forest clearings. The exhibition is thus not confined to its walls but becomes a region-wide music festival in the Bavarian Forest.

The TonYversum

The TonYversum was created specifically for the State Exhibition in Freyung – a place that stands for vibrant musical culture and is intended to continue to serve as a cultural site after the exhibition ends. Its location in the Bavarian Forest also makes a visit an excursion into one of Bavaria's most charming natural landscapes.

Atmosphere

"Music in Bavaria" is an exhibition for all the senses. Those who walk through the rooms of the TonYversum will hear, see, and experience music – and can then immerse themselves in one of the daily concerts in the region. A combination of museum, festival, and cultural tour through all of Bavaria.

Music in Bavaria — edition 2026

The Bavarian State Exhibition "Music in Bavaria" can be seen from April 25 to November 8, 2026, at the TonYversum Freyung. On all 199 exhibition days, live music will be heard throughout the region under the motto "This is how Bavaria sounds" – daily concerts and performances in addition to the exhibition.

The 2026 State Exhibition

For 199 days, from April 25 to November 8, 2026, the TonYversum in Freyung presents the Bavarian State Exhibition "Music in Bavaria". The exhibition leads as a musical journey through time from the Middle Ages to the present – with precious originals from the crumhorn to the jukebox, soundscapes, and interactive listening worlds.

Accompanying this, live music will be heard in the region every day of the 199 days under the motto "This is how Bavaria sounds": concerts and performances in inns, on market squares, in churches, and in forest clearings.
