Harvesting like in the old days at Southern Germany's largest open-air museum
The Autumn Festival is one of the most popular events at the Franconian Open-Air Museum Bad Windsheim, one of Southern Germany's largest open-air museums. On a weekend in September, the agricultural harvest work of past centuries comes to life: work is done on fields and in farmyards as it was done before, using historical equipment and traditional manual labor.
The focus is on the typical tasks of the harvest season:
Around 1 p.m. on both festival days, a harvest parade moves across the museum grounds, after which harvest work continues in the fields and farmyards.
In the workshops, craftsmen demonstrate historical techniques. Weaving is demonstrated at the Köblerhaus, and the museum beekeeper provides insights into beekeeping – from frame construction to the historic log hive.
The open-air museum on Eisweiherweg in Bad Windsheim, in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim, displays relocated historical buildings from all over Franconia on a vast site. The Autumn Festival makes the museum collection tangible and vividly conveys how deeply the harvest tradition is rooted in the Franconian cultural landscape.
The 2026 Autumn Festival at the Franconian Open-Air Museum Bad Windsheim will take place on the weekend of September 19 to 20. The museum grounds will become the stage for the agricultural harvest work of past eras.
The focus will be on harvest work, freshly pressed apple juice, steamed potatoes, dried fruit, ground grain, and baked goods from the historic ovens. The oil mill will be in operation, craftsmen will demonstrate their skills in the workshops, and weaving will be demonstrated at the Köblerhaus. Around 1 p.m. on both days, a harvest parade will move across the grounds. On September 20, there will also be a special exhibition tour.
Annually on a September weekend. 2026: September 19 to 20.
The museum is located at Eisweiherweg 1 in Bad Windsheim. Arrive by car via the A7 (exit Bad Windsheim) or A3. By train to Bad Windsheim station, then a few minutes to the museum.
Regular museum admission applies. Small fees may apply for individual hands-on activities (e.g., frame construction with the beekeeper, material costs €1.50). Current prices at freilandmuseum.de.
