One of Germany's largest pottery markets meets the young Halle Wine Festival
For decades, the Hallescher Pottery Market has been one of Germany's most important ceramic markets. On the main market square of the Saale city — flanked by the Roter Turm, Marktkirche, and Handel monument — around 90 pottery and ceramic workshops from Germany, France, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands present their work. The range extends from everyday ceramics (cups, bowls, jugs) and studio pieces (sculptural works, lamps, fountains) to jewelry and special forms. The selection is curated: only professional workshops with a distinct style are granted a stall, with the application deadline ending each year at the end of March.
Anyone familiar with the scene knows that Halle, alongside Diessen am Ammersee, Oldenburg, and Marburg, is one of the key destinations on the German pottery calendar. Over 25,000 visitors came to the 2025 event, many from the collector scene, who travel long distances for specific workshops.
Since 2025, the Pottery Market has been accompanied by the Halle Wine Festival — an event that the city of Halle has consciously established as a bridge to the Saale-Unstrut wine region. Around 15 vintners, most from the nearby Saale-Unstrut growing region with its focus on Freyburg, Naumburg, and Bad Kösen, serve their wines on the west side of the market square. Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, and Weißburgunder traditionally take center stage, alongside reds like Portugieser and newer cuvées.
Halle is the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt and, as an independent city, is administratively part of the immediate surroundings of the Saalekreis. Together with the Pottery Market, the Lantern Festival, and the Long Night of Science, this weekend is among the three or four largest regular folk and market events in the city center. Admission is free.
The 2026 edition is the second joint staging of the Pottery Market and Wine Festival — a combination that the city of Halle first trialed in 2025 and is now continuing. The pottery workshops with their stalls are on the east side of the market square, and the vintner stalls of the Wine Festival are on the west side. Tradition meets a newer event — and both benefit from the mutual footfall. The market square becomes a large communal area where people can not only shop but also eat, drink, and linger.
The official list of workshops with names and origins will be published by the City of Halle from summer 2026 on halle.de.
Halle (Saale) main train station is an ICE hub. From the station to the market square is about a 10-minute walk or a short tram ride on lines 7 or 9 (stop: „Marktplatz"). Parking is available in the surrounding multi-story car parks (Klausstraße, Hansering, Riveufer).
Free admission. Pottery is purchased on-site (cash or card payment, depending on the workshop); the Wine Festival sells wine by the glass or bottle.
Saturday 10 am-6 pm, Sunday 11 am-6 pm. The parallel Wine Festival starts each day in the afternoon and continues into the evening.
