The 662nd edition of one of North Thuringia's oldest Kirmes traditions — Pentecostal Eichsfeld tradition for over 650 years
Few folk festivals in Germany can look back on such a long tradition as the Heimensteiner Kirmes. With its 662nd edition in 2026, the festival is older than most European universities — it originated in the late Middle Ages as a Kirchweih (church consecration) festival for the Heimenstein district, the oldest part of Heiligenstadt. Over the centuries, the Kirmes has survived political upheavals, the Reformation, wars, and the GDR era, and today it is one of the most important identity festivals for the town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt and the Eichsfeld region.
The Eichsfeld is a geographical and cultural region in northern Thuringia and southern Lower Saxony. Its Catholic character — rare in predominantly Protestant Central Germany — and a strong tradition of local clubs have fostered a unique festival culture here. Kirmes festivals are central moments of identity for village and town communities in the Eichsfeld. The Heimensteiner Kirmes is the oldest and largest of these traditions.
The organizer for almost 100 years has been the Heimensteiner Männer- und Burschenverein 1932 e.V. — a club dedicated to preserving the Kirmes tradition. The young men of the club organize the festival tent, parade, music program, and culinary offerings on a voluntary basis. The club ensures that the Heimensteiner Kirmes does not become a commercial tourist event but remains firmly anchored in the community of Heiligenstadt.
The highlight of the four festival days is the grand parade on Pentecost Monday through the streets of the historic old town of Heiligenstadt. Hundreds of participants march through the city center in regional costumes, with historical floats, clubs, brass bands, and costumed groups. The residents of Heiligenstadt and their guests line the route, applauding and participating. Afterwards, the celebration moves back to the festival tent on the Heimenstein festival grounds.
Heilbad Heiligenstadt is the district capital of the Eichsfeld district in northern Thuringia — a historic town with a remarkable old town, a mountain church, and several monasteries. With around 17,000 inhabitants, it is manageable but culturally active: in addition to the Heimensteiner Kirmes, the Eichsfeldjahr (Eichsfeld Year) with various folklore events also takes place here. Theodor Storm and Heinrich Heine worked and lived in Heilbad Heiligenstadt — the Storm House commemorates this.
From Pentecost Friday (May 22nd) to Pentecost Monday (May 25th), the Heimenstein district is once again transformed into the festival grounds of one of Thuringia's oldest folk festivals. The Kirmes begins on Friday evening with the traditional opening in the festival tent; Saturday and Sunday feature dance evenings and live music. The highlight is the grand parade on Pentecost Monday through the historic old town of Heiligenstadt.
The catering is managed by the members of the Heimensteiner Männer- und Burschenverein on a voluntary basis. Eichsfeld specialties such as Stracke (cured sausage), Hausmacher Sülze (traditional meat jelly), and traditional festive menus are the focus of the culinary offerings.
