One of Thuringia's most significant Catholic processions — through the city center of the Eichsfeld district town on June 4, 2026
The Eichsfeld is a historically Catholic region in the north of Thuringia — a confessional island amidst the predominantly Protestant surrounding areas. Heilbad Heiligenstadt is the district capital and religious center of this region. Corpus Christi — the Catholic high feast of the Body and Blood of Christ on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday — is celebrated here with one of Thuringia's largest Corpus Christi processions. In 2026, the feast day falls on June 4.
The procession begins at 9 a.m. at the market square in front of the town hall and proceeds through the historic old town. The monstrance with the consecrated Sacrament of the Altar is carried at the front, under an artfully decorated canopy (Himmel). It is followed by brass bands, parish choirs, First Communicants in white dresses, children receiving First Communion, nuns, and believers from all over the Eichsfeld region. At several stations along the route — decorated with floral carpets and altars — the Sacrament is placed for adoration, and Bible passages are read and hymns are sung.
A special feature of the Eichsfeld Corpus Christi processions are the artfully laid floral carpets at the four stations — communities and parish children often spend days beforehand creating religious motifs from petals, moss, and grasses. These floral carpets are crossed by the clergy during the procession. The tradition dates back to the 18th century and is now a cultural heritage of the region.
Heilbad Heiligenstadt is the district capital of the Eichsfeld district (state of Thuringia). The town combines Catholic tradition with spa facilities (brine springs). Arrival via A38 highway, exit Heilbad Heiligenstadt, train to Heilbad Heiligenstadt station. During the procession, the city center is closed to car traffic; park-and-ride is recommended.
