Largest Volksfest of the Eichsfeld — three days of city festival on Wilhelmstrasse with Heimatshoppen
The Stadtfest Heilbad Heiligenstadt is the largest Volksfest of the Eichsfeld and celebrates its 34th edition in 2026. The distinctive name "Festival of the Carrot Kings" originates from an old Eichsfeld mockery figure and is now an integral part of the festival's identity. From September 11th to 13th, 2026, the Wilhelmstrasse will transform into a vibrant festival mile.
The festival features three stages with a wide-ranging music program:
A fairground along the extended Wilhelmstrasse offers rides and children's attractions. Beer tents from local clubs provide guests with cold drinks — festival attendance directly supports 18 clubs from Heilbad Heiligenstadt and the region. This connection between festive joy and volunteer club work is the defining characteristic of the festival: the organizers emphasize that "with every visit, 18 clubs from Heilbad Heiligenstadt and the region are directly supported."
On Sunday, September 13th, 2026, from 1 PM to 6 PM, the Heimatshoppen initiative takes place — the shops in Heiligenstadt's city center open for Sunday shopping with special promotions and discounts. Thus, the festival combines its Volksfest tradition with the promotion of regional retail.
Traditional festival souvenirs include a Carrot King pin and a ceramic beer mug — both available through the organizing committee or the tourist information office. The pins are a nod to the festival's name and are popular collector's items.
The district town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt (approx. 16,000 inhabitants) is located in the Eichsfeld district in northwestern Thuringia — a region with its own cultural identity, shaped by Catholic tradition (the Eichsfeld is a Catholic enclave in the predominantly Protestant central German region), Kneipp tradition (recognized Kneipp spa town since 1929), and the historical connection with Theodor Storm, who lived here as a district judge from 1856 to 1864. Visitors to the city festival can also explore the easily accessible Storm House, the Eichsfeld Museum, or the Kneipp spa facilities.
The 34th edition of the Festival of the Carrot Kings brings the proven format to the capital of Eichsfeld: three days of festival mile on Wilhelmstrasse, three stages with a diverse music program, a fairground with rides, and beer tents from local clubs. Sunday combines festival activities with Heimatshoppen — city center shops are open from 1 PM to 6 PM.
18 local clubs from Heilbad Heiligenstadt and the region directly benefit from festival attendance, securing their club activities for the next year. This combination of festive joy and volunteer sponsorship is the festival's hallmark.
