Maritime Christmas at the Hanseatic Old Harbour

The Hanseatic Old Harbour is one of Stade's distinctive sights. With its old warehouse buildings, moored traditional ships, and the body of water in the heart of the old town, it forms a harbour backdrop that unfolds a special magic in Advent. The Hafen-Weihnacht at Fischmarkt consciously uses this backdrop and makes the maritime atmosphere a key element of the market.

Fischmarkt — Central Harbour Square

Historically, the Fischmarkt was the marketplace where fish from the harbour landings was sold. Today, it is one of Stade's most atmospheric squares and the venue for many events. Its location directly on the water and its setting with historic buildings make it the ideal place for a harbour Christmas market.

Huts Instead of Stalls

The Hafen-Weihnacht does not rely on classic market stalls but on quaintly built huts. These convey a different atmosphere than the sober market stall — they create a hut atmosphere, as known from alpine Christmas markets, and surprise with this in the North German harbour setting. Indoor heating and seating invite visitors to linger.

Advent Offerings and Mulled Wine

The huts offer mulled wine (Glühwein) in various variations, punch, Feuerzangenbowle, alpine and North German specialities, bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), crepes, candied almonds, gingerbread, Advent decorations, arts and crafts, and gift ideas. The harbour location allows visitors to look out at the water with a warm cup in hand.

Extended Opening until December 29th

Unlike the Pferdemarkt Christmas market, which traditionally closes on December 23rd, the Hafen-Weihnacht also opens between the holidays until December 29th. This makes it a meeting point even in the contemplative period after Christmas Eve — a charming peculiarity among Lower Saxony's Christmas markets.

Combination with the Pferdemarkt Market

Both Stade Christmas markets are just a few minutes' walk from each other. An Advent excursion to Stade ideally combines the classic atmosphere at Pferdemarkt with the maritime hut atmosphere at Fischmarkt — two very different Advent experiences in one city.
