Fennpfuhl – a prefab-housing district with its own Stadtteilfest
The Fennpfuhl district in the Lichtenberg borough is a neighbourhood entirely re-planned in the 1970s around the artificial Fennpfuhl lake, with high-rise buildings, a park and a central square (Anton-Saefkow-Platz). Today, a socially mixed population lives here, with a high proportion of families and older people. The Fennpfuhlfest was launched in the early 2000s as an initiative of the Lichtenberg housing co-operative (WGLi) and local associations – a deliberate response to the wish to keep the district visible and alive.
The "Wir von hier" tradition
The festival stands in the «Wir von hier» (We from here) tradition. In 2022, the 18th edition took place – the district's anniversary year (50 years of Fennpfuhl) – with performances by children's choirs, school dance groups, the cross-generational FröSi choir and music ensembles from the Shostakovich Music School. The 19th edition followed on June 23, 2023, in Fennpfuhlpark, with over 30 information stands from local initiatives and a "Wir von hier" stage programme. The format alternates between Anton-Saefkow-Platz and Fennpfuhlpark depending on year and weather.
Programme and stands
The many information stands are characteristic: associations, projects and initiatives from the district present their work. Alongside, several hours of stage programme feature local acts – school choirs, children's dance groups, Berlin bands and solo artists. Classic programme items: a drawing and painting competition for children, a Fennpfuhl quiz with prizes, stilt walkers and an evening fire show, plus an open public consultation hour with the District Office. To close, a traditional lantern procession led by a marching band winds through the neighbourhood.
Organising alliance
The festival is a classic alliance format: the Lichtenberg housing co-operative (WGLi), the Forum Fennpfuhl, the Fennpfuhl Citizens' Association, the Lichtenberg District Office, plus other local housing companies, the Lichtenberg-Nord neighbourhood centre and numerous local projects. The District Office is regularly represented by the District Mayor's office and members of the local council – including an open consultation hour.
2026 dates
The exact 2026 date will be announced in spring 2026 via the WGLi events page, the Lichtenberg-Nord neighbourhood centre and the Lichtenberg District Office. In recent editions, the festival has been held between June and September. Free admission.
