Bavarian lifestyle in Wust, Altmark — since 2006, 20th anniversary in 2026
There is hardly any region in Germany that seems further from Bavaria in terms of landscape and culture than the Altmark in the Stendal district (Saxony-Anhalt): flat fields, brick churches, Lutheran-influenced villages, Hanseatic past. It is all the more surprising that the tiny village of Wust (part of the Wust-Fischbeck municipality) organizes one of Northeast Germany's most popular Oktoberfests — the Wuster Oktoberfest. Since 2006, visitors in dirndls and Lederhosen have flocked to the festival tent on the edge of the village on the first weekend of October.
In 2026, the Wuster Oktoberfest will celebrate its 20th anniversary. What began in 2006 as a sports-driven club initiative by SG Traktor Wust has evolved over the years into a large, regionally anchored event — and is now considered by connoisseurs to be the best address for authentic Bavarian Wiesn feeling beyond the Danube.
The beer tent serves what makes the real Wiesn: Spaten Oktoberfest beer in the classic Maß (liter mug). Accompanied by pretzels, Wiesn-Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), and typical Bavarian festival tent cuisine — served in the tent with long tables, wooden benches, and the unmistakable Wiesn atmosphere.
The musical backbone is the Elbe-Havel-Land Fire Brigade Band, providing the right sound with classic brass music. The program is complemented by the live band Village Boys (or Village Boys & Friends), who create a lively dancing atmosphere with hits, pop, and Wiesn classics. Late in the evening, DJ Karsten takes over and continues the festival tent party.
Classic festival tent games like nail hammering, stein holding, and similar disciplines ensure the necessary competitive spirit. During the day, there is coffee, cake, and a bazaar — a typical club festival atmosphere that clearly distinguishes the Wuster Oktoberfest from the commercialized Munich Wiesn and gives it its special charm.
Before the festival tent truly gets going, SG Traktor Wust traditionally plays a home game. Sport and the festival tent are closely intertwined in Wust — the sports club is a pillar of the festival.
Wust has merged with Fischbeck to form the municipality of Wust-Fischbeck and is picturesquely located between the Elbe and Havel rivers — in the Elbe-Havel-Land collective municipality. Nearby is the interesting Muuuhseum der Altmark, a themed museum about the dairy industry. Those who want to combine the Oktoberfest with a small Altmark exploration will find ideal starting conditions here.
The 20th edition of the Wuster Oktoberfest will take place around German Unity Day: Friday, October 2, Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, 2026. Festivities begin daily from 2 PM in the festival tent on the edge of the village. Detailed program to be published by the organizer in late summer 2026 via the Wuster Oktoberfest Facebook page.
