Four weeks of market with wooden huts, ice stock sport, and open-air DJ parties on the Historic Island
St. Peter-Ording (short SPO) in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein is one of Germany's most famous North Sea resorts — renowned for its 12-kilometer-long, up to 2-kilometer-wide sandy beach, the wooden stilt houses on the beach, and its characteristic double-town structure (St. Peter with the village center, St. Peter-Ording with the beach promenade). The HEIMeliger Weihnachtsmarkt is the seaside resort's central Advent event and takes place in the historic village center around the Historic Island — away from the beach, but in the heart of the old town.
The Historic Island is the oldest part of St. Peter-Ording — an area naturally bordered by two streams, which was developed as the municipality's tourist center as early as the 1920s. With thatched-roof houses, the historic St. Peter's Church, and cozy restaurants, the Historic Island provides the postcard setting for the Christmas market.
The visual hallmark of the HEIMeliger Weihnachtsmarkt are the rustic wooden huts housing each stand — unadorned in the best sense, with fir branches, fairy lights, and handmade wooden signs. A special feature: the fir trees placed between the huts are decorated with stars, angels, and ornaments made by kindergarten children from St. Peter-Ording. This lovingly detailed staging makes the market a specialty: no high-gloss marketing, but village community.
The accompanying program goes far beyond "drinking mulled wine":
An SPO specialty: two open-air Christmas parties with DJ — on December 5th and December 19th, 2026. These parties transform the market into a wintery open-air club in the evening — typical DJ sets of Christmas music in modern remixes, Schlager, pop, and dance classics. The market remains open longer on these dates, developing a special atmosphere that adds a more modern component to the "Heimelige" (cozy) feel.
The 2026 edition runs exceptionally long: from December 4, 2026, to January 3, 2027 — thus spanning Christmas, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. This makes the market one of the few North German Christmas markets still open in the second week of the holidays and on New Year's Day — an SPO specialty that many family vacationers in the seaside resort particularly appreciate.
Twice, the market will turn into an open-air party night in the evening: on Saturday, December 5, 2026, and Saturday, December 19, 2026 — with DJ sets, extended opening hours, and a special atmosphere between a Christmas market and an open-air club.
Free admission to the market. Ice stock sport for a small fee or deposit. Children's cinema free of charge. Food at stalls payable (typical mulled wine prices €4–5, bratwurst €4–5).
Train: Marsch-Bahn Hamburg–Westerland, stop St. Peter-Ording. From there, a 5–10 min. walk to the village center and the Historic Island. Car: B202 from Husum, parking in the town center (some paid).
Market operation from December 4th, 2026, to January 3rd, 2027 (regularly until early January — extension over Christmas/New Year). Exact opening days and times at st-peter-ording.de/weihnachten.
Free admission to the entire market area. Ice stock sport typically for a small fee or deposit. Children's cinema free of charge. Food and drinks at stalls payable.
