About Pilgrimage Sünching–Altötting

Since 1874, a foot pilgrimage has set out annually from Sünching in the district of Regensburg to the Bavarian holy site of Altötting. In 2026, this unbroken tradition – only paused in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic – will mark its 150th anniversary. Over two days and approximately 90 kilometers, participants walk, pray, and sing through Lower Bavaria to the Black Madonna in the Chapel of Grace. The 2026 jubilee is themed "Transitus".

A 150-Year Tradition

The foot pilgrimage from Sünching to Altötting is one of the traditional pilgrimages in Eastern Bavaria. The first official record of a Sünching pilgrimage procession dates back to May 26, 1874. Since then, the pilgrimage has journeyed year after year to the holy site of Altötting – with the exception of the pandemic-related break in 2020 and 2021. In 2026, it will be held for the 150th time and, as a jubilee pilgrimage, is themed "Transitus".

Two Days on Foot Through Lower Bavaria

The pilgrimage covers about 90 kilometers in two daily stages. The first day leads from Sünching via Mengkofen, Dingolfing, Frontenhausen, and Gangkofen to Massing. On the second day, the journey continues early through Wald and Winhöring to the Kapellplatz in Altötting, where the pilgrimage arrives on Sunday morning with a solemn procession. Prayer, singing, and community mark the way.

Holy Site Altötting

The destination is the Chapel of Grace in Altötting with the Black Madonna – one of Germany's most important Marian pilgrimage sites. The pilgrimage is organized by the Association of Altötting Foot Pilgrims, founded in 2004; the pilgrimage leader and 1st chairwoman is Brigitte Milde. Registration is not required – every pilgrim is welcome. For relatives who only wish to experience the arrival, buses run to Altötting.
