Light installations, fairy tales, and Biikebrennen on the North Sea — four days of February magic
SPO leuchtet — Licht trifft Lyrik is a light art festival that transforms the Erlebnis-Promenade of Sankt Peter-Ording in the spa district into an immersive installation every February. Shimmering mythical creatures made of light, oversized mushrooms, a radiant moon — the installations are a blend of fairytale atmosphere and contemporary light art. At each station, poems and fairy tales accompany the scenery, lending literary depth to the light displays.
The installation is spread across the entire Erlebnis-Promenade, connecting the spa district on the beach with the stilt houses and the pier. Those who stroll along discover the installations not all at once, but piece by piece. It is intentionally not a loud, quickly consumable event, but a quiet, contemplative walk — well-suited for families, couples, and anyone who enjoys experiencing the North Sea outside of peak season. The opening hours are daily from 5 PM to 9 PM.
The festival's highlight is the Biikebrennen on Saturday, February 21, 2026. The Biikebrennen is an ancient North Frisian custom: large bonfires are used to bid farewell to winter. In SPO, the torchlight procession starts at 6 PM at the Erlebnis-Hus, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the large Biike bonfire at 6:30 PM at Buhne-Platz. From 8:30 PM, a party follows at the Ahoi venue with DJ Volker Mittmann (free admission). The procession is accompanied by luminous stilt walkers — an image that atmospherically bridges the gap between the light art festival and folk tradition.
On February 22, participating shops in SPO will offer Sunday shopping from 12 PM to 5 PM. Those who wish to delve into traditional flavors can enjoy the classic North Frisian Kale Dinner (Grünkohl-Essen) after the Biikebrennen in one of the participating restaurants — a staple of the Biike weekend throughout North Frisia.
SPO is a North Sea spa and the most famous seaside resort in North Frisia, renowned for its kilometer-long sandy beach and stilt houses. In February, the peak season is far away — and that is precisely why SPO leuchtet is one of the most beautiful occasions to discover the region: light art directly on the Wadden Sea, Biikebrennen as a living North Frisian tradition, and the tranquility of a coast that belongs almost entirely to itself.
The 2026 edition of SPO leuchtet — Licht trifft Lyrik runs from Thursday, February 19, to Sunday, February 22, 2026. The venue is the Erlebnis-Promenade in the spa district of Sankt Peter-Ording. Daily from 5 PM to 9 PM, installations of mythical creatures, giant mushrooms, and a radiant moon illuminate the promenade. At each station, you'll find texts of poetry and fairy tales.
On Saturday, February 21, the light art format is combined with the North Frisian Biikebrennen: torchlight procession starting at Erlebnis-Hus, followed by the lighting of the bonfire at Buhne-Platz, then a party at Ahoi. On Sunday, February 22, participating SPO shops will offer Sunday shopping from 12 PM to 5 PM.
