76 Years of Heimatfest on the Hornburger Sattel
Bornstedt is picturesquely situated south of Könnern, a district in the Salzlandkreis, state of Saxony-Anhalt. Above the village rises the Bornstedt Castle Ruins, called 'Schweinsburg' by locals — a remnant of medieval walls that creates more atmosphere than many better-preserved castles. It is precisely here, at the foot of the ruins, that the Heimatfestverein has organized the Heimatfest Bornstedt annually since 1949.
What you experience is a piece of living folk culture from the Mansfelder Land: four festival days with a parade, shooting, stage program, dancing, knightly games by the 'Ritterschaft der Burg zu Bornstedt' (Knights of the Bornstedt Castle), and a communal coffee gathering on Sunday afternoon. The Heimatfestverein has organized the festival on a voluntary basis for decades — one of the oldest and most traditional events in the Salzlandkreis. Those who arrive with a spirit for hiking can combine the Heimatfest with a stroll across the Hornburger Sattel and a view into the Saale valley.
