In midsummer, the Vatterode village center transforms into a small festival hub: parallel to the classic village festival on the Schulstraße festival grounds, the Vatterode Riding, Driving, and Breeding Club hosts its traditional riding and driving days at the former sports field near Wippergrund station. In between, the Vatterode Park Railway shuttles along its short but charming route, transporting visitors between the two festival areas. This creates a typical village weekend that showcases the rural Mansfeld charm – horses, railway, bratwurst, brass band music – in its most authentic form.
In the Mansfeld-Südharz District
Vatterode is located in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, not far from the Luther town of Eisleben and the Mansfeld mining region. The area is steeped in history, copper shale, and a quiet, hilly landscape. It is precisely this regional context – Saxony-Anhalt far from the main tourist streams – that makes the village festival a small piece of living homeland, one that you won't find in any travel guide and is more often recommended by word of mouth.
What You Can Experience
On the Schulstraße festival grounds, you can expect classic village festival ingredients: a festival tent with live music, cool draft beer, bratwurst and steak from the grill, a cake buffet, a children's play area, and dancing under the open sky in the evening. At the riding and driving tournament, riders from the Mansfeld region will showcase dressage and show jumping, complemented by historical carriage rides and driving demonstrations. The park railway runs every hour to half hour and is one of the main attractions of the weekend, especially for families with small children.

Like so many village festivals in Saxony-Anhalt, Vatterode thrives on the commitment of local clubs. The park railway is a non-profit association, the riders organize their tournament entirely on a voluntary basis, and the village festival is supported by the local community. In 2026, the joint festival weekend falls on July 25th and 26th – right in the middle of the summer holidays in Saxony-Anhalt. Families from the region, railway enthusiasts, and equestrian fans meet in the village center and use the small park railway as a shuttle between Schulstraße and Wippergrund.
The Vatterode Park Railway operates a narrow-gauge line in the gently rolling Mansfeld countryside and is in continuous operation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on this weekend. On the Schulstraße festival grounds, the organizer provides food and drinks, live music, and a children's program, while the Vatterode Riding, Driving, and Breeding Club presents dressage, show jumping, and driving sports on the tournament grounds.

Getting There
By car via the B180 or L228 to Gerbstedt-Vatterode. Parking available at the Schulstraße festival grounds and at Wippergrund station. By public transport to Hettstedt or Eisleben, then bus connections towards Vatterode (limited on-demand services on Sundays).
Opening Hours
The park railway runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the festival weekend. The village festival and riding/driving days generally have slightly longer opening hours into the evening.
Families & Dogs
Ideal for families with small children (train ride, horses, play area). Dogs on a leash are welcome but should be considerate of the horses in the riding tournament area.
Admission
Admission to the village festival is usually free. Small fees apply for rides on the park railway and for admission to the riding and driving tournament.
