About String Quartet Festival Heidelberg

From January 22 to 25, 2026, the 21st edition of the Heidelberger Frühling String Quartet Festival is dedicated to a double anniversary: 250 years of American independence and the birth of the modern string quartet genre by Joseph Haydn. For four days, the Alte Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg transforms into a meeting point for the international quartet elite — the program features the Fibonacci Quartet, the Javus Quartet from Vienna, the Kleio Quartet from the BBC New Generation Programme, the Japanese Quartet Integra (Audience Award ARD Competition 2022), and the renowned Schumann Quartet. Works by Haydn, Bartók, and Smetana stand alongside American voices John Adams, Amy Beach, Walter Piston, Ruth Schonthal, and Bryce Dessner. Opening concert with broadcast on SWR Kultur and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. Workshops and concert talks complement the eleven concerts.

21st Heidelberger Frühling String Quartet Festival

The String Quartet Festival is one of Germany's most important chamber music formats and has been an integral part of the renowned Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival since 2006. In a concentrated atmosphere, focused on four days and a single venue, it brings together the international quartet elite with a highly engaged audience — chamber music in its purest, most intimate form. The 21st edition in 2026 will take place from Thursday, January 22 to Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the Alte Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg in Bergheim.

Theme 2026 — Across the Atlantic

The 2026 edition is themed "Across the Atlantic and Back to Joseph Haydn". It commemorates two historical milestones that coincide: 250 years of American independence (1776) and the establishment of the modern string quartet genre by Joseph Haydn in the 1770s. The program accordingly spans between American and European chamber music:

  • Joseph Haydn — Father of the genre, several works as a common thread
  • John Adams — Minimalism from California
  • Amy Beach — American Romantic (1867–1944)
  • Walter Piston — Neoclassical American voice
  • Ruth Schonthal — German-American composer
  • Bryce Dessner — Guitarist of The National, composer of contemporary string quartets
  • Béla Bartók, Bedřich Smetana and Czech chamber music as a European counterweight

Five International Quartets

The participating ensembles in 2026:

  • Fibonacci Quartet — young British quartet, rising on the international competition scene
  • Javus Quartet — Viennese ensemble, prize winner 2020
  • Kleio Quartet — part of the renowned BBC New Generation Artists Programme
  • Quartet Integra — Japanese quartet, Audience Award ARD Music Competition 2022
  • Schumann Quartet — established European ensemble, regular guest of the festival

In total, the program comprises eleven concerts as well as supplementary workshops and concert talks.

Broadcasts and Reception

The opening concert will be recorded by SWR Kultur and broadcast on February 2, 2026; Deutschlandfunk Kultur will air its own recording on January 25, 2026. This allows the String Quartet Festival to reach a nationwide and European classical audience far beyond Heidelberg.

Heidelberger Frühling as the Presenting Festival

The Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival was founded in 1997 and is now one of Germany's most prestigious music festivals. It unites several formats under one roof: the major Spring Festival in March/April, the Lied Festival, the Academy, the String Quartet Competition, and the String Quartet Festival presented here. The artistic director since its inception has been Thorsten Schmidt.

Heidelberg and the Alte Pädagogische Hochschule

The venue for the String Quartet Festival is the Alte Pädagogische Hochschule in Heidelberg's Bergheim district, a historic university building with excellent acoustics in the auditorium. The focus on a single venue, the short distances between concerts and breaks, and the opportunity to interact directly with the musicians in concert talks are key attractions of the format.
