21st Edition — Across the Atlantic and Back to Joseph Haydn
The String Quartet Festival is one of Germany's most important chamber music formats and has been an integral part of the renowned Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival since 2006. In a concentrated atmosphere, focused on four days and a single venue, it brings together the international quartet elite with a highly engaged audience — chamber music in its purest, most intimate form. The 21st edition in 2026 will take place from Thursday, January 22 to Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the Alte Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg in Bergheim.
The 2026 edition is themed "Across the Atlantic and Back to Joseph Haydn". It commemorates two historical milestones that coincide: 250 years of American independence (1776) and the establishment of the modern string quartet genre by Joseph Haydn in the 1770s. The program accordingly spans between American and European chamber music:

In total, the program comprises eleven concerts as well as supplementary workshops and concert talks.
The opening concert will be recorded by SWR Kultur and broadcast on February 2, 2026; Deutschlandfunk Kultur will air its own recording on January 25, 2026. This allows the String Quartet Festival to reach a nationwide and European classical audience far beyond Heidelberg.
The Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival was founded in 1997 and is now one of Germany's most prestigious music festivals. It unites several formats under one roof: the major Spring Festival in March/April, the Lied Festival, the Academy, the String Quartet Competition, and the String Quartet Festival presented here. The artistic director since its inception has been Thorsten Schmidt.
The venue for the String Quartet Festival is the Alte Pädagogische Hochschule in Heidelberg's Bergheim district, a historic university building with excellent acoustics in the auditorium. The focus on a single venue, the short distances between concerts and breaks, and the opportunity to interact directly with the musicians in concert talks are key attractions of the format.
Four days of chamber music at the Alte Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg. Five international string quartets present a double anniversary: 250 years of American independence and 250 years of the Haydn-style string quartet genre. On the program: Joseph Haydn as a common thread, American composers from John Adams to Amy Beach to Bryce Dessner, complemented by Bartók and Czech chamber music. The opening concert is recorded by SWR Kultur, and Deutschlandfunk Kultur airs its own recording. Workshops and concert talks complement the 11 concerts for a highly concentrated chamber music weekend.
