Franconian wine festival in the historic courtyard of the Kartause Mariaebrück
Astheim, a district of the Lower Franconian wine town of Volkach, lies in the heart of the Mainschleife. The village is famous for its Kartause Mariaebrück – a Carthusian monastery founded in the 14th century, whose historic courtyard today provides the setting for one of the most popular wine festivals in the Kitzingen district. For two summer evenings in June, the courtyard, enclosed by sandstone walls, transforms into an illuminated festival area: elegant tables, fairy lights, wine glasses, and the Main river breeze signaling the end of the day.
The wine selection comes directly from Astheim and the surrounding area: the Franconian vineyard site Astheimer Karthäuser is a historically documented steep slope vineyard, primarily cultivating Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, and Bacchus. In addition, Riesling, Domina, and Spätburgunder from Astheim, Escherndorf, Nordheim, and Volkach are served – the central trilogy of Lower Franconian Mainfranken wines.
The Festgemeinschaft Astheim organizes the festival together:
The proceeds benefit the association work of the four participating groups. The festival is run entirely on a voluntary basis – a model typical of the Mainschleife, explaining the festival's deep roots in the village community.
The menu features classic Franconian accompaniments to wine: Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart), Bratwürste (grilled sausages) from a charcoal grill, Schnitzel, Franconian snack platters with smoked meats and regional cheeses. Supplemented by desserts on the weekend evening. The atmosphere thrives on the historic backdrop: the Carthusian monastery's masonry retains the day's warmth, the lighting is kept subtle, and the singing performances by the male choir and occasionally a brass band punctuate the courtyard.
Astheim belongs to the town of Volkach in the Kitzingen district (Lower Franconia, Bavaria). The Mainschleife – that distinctive 12 km loop of the Main river between Volkach and Escherndorf – is one of Bavaria's best-known wine-growing regions. Visitors to the wine festival can combine their stay with a walk along the Main riverbank, a visit to the Madonna of the Rosary in the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten (Volkach), or a Main river ferry trip to Sommerach.
The 2026 edition follows the usual concept: two evenings in the summer Kartäuserhof, starting at 6:00 PM each day. Organized by the Festgemeinschaft Astheim (male choir, wine and fruit growing association, DJK, fire brigade).
The courtyard will traditionally be set up with fairy lights and standing tables. The wines served will primarily come from the Astheimer Karthäuser site and from neighboring vintners in Volkach, Escherndorf, and Nordheim. Food: Zwiebelkuchen from the previous evening, Bratwürste from the charcoal grill, Schnitzel, Franconian snack platters. Singing interludes by the male choir will punctuate the wine service and give the festival its unique character.
Specific detailed programs and special performances will be published on the festival's Facebook page and on astheim-main.de.
