A Colourful Neighbourhood Festival on Heidelberg's Neuenheim Market Square
The Neuenheimer Fischerfest is one of Heidelberg's most traditional neighbourhood festivals, boasting over 40 years of history. It is the social highlight of the Neuenheim district and is organised by the Stadtteilverein Neuenheim e.V. The venue is Neuenheim Market Square with the adjacent streets Brückenstraße and Bergstraße — about 600 metres from the Neckar, within walking distance of the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) and Heidelberg's Old Town.
Three Days of Festivities on the First Weekend of September
The Fischerfest 2026 runs from Friday, September 4th to Sunday, September 6th. The actual festival activities begin early on Saturday with the flea market around the market square — one of Heidelberg's largest second-hand sales. On Friday evening, the Market Square Serenade with classical music in front of the Stiftung Erinnerung (Remembrance Foundation) will set the mood for the festival. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, cover bands and DJs from various genres will dominate the main stage; during the day, dance groups, school bands, and children's choirs from Neuenheim schools will perform.
Culinary Offerings and Family Atmosphere
The Neuenheim clubs, shops, and restaurants provide the catering — from pizza and pasta from the Mensa restaurant to bratwurst and fries from the sports club, and vegetarian bowls and crêpes. Sweets can be found at the parish stand (waffles, crêpes, almonds) and at the ice cream van from the Heidelberg ice cream manufactory. For children, there are carousels, games, and face painting — typical for a German neighbourhood festival.
Stadtteilverein Neuenheim e.V. — Organiser of the Festival
The Stadtteilverein Neuenheim e.V. (Lutherstraße 18) is the link between Neuenheim's over 100 clubs, churches, schools, and businesses. In addition to the Fischerfest, it organises the Market Square Serenades, Advent events, and cultural neighbourhood tours. Stall allocation for the flea market takes place in advance during the summer — interested parties can contact the Stadtteilverein.
Heidelberg-Neuenheim — University and Residential District
Neuenheim, located on the right bank of the Neckar opposite Heidelberg's Old Town, has been a bourgeois district with a strong connection to Heidelberg University since the 19th century. The district houses the Neuenheimer Feld — Germany's largest university campus for natural sciences and medicine. Despite its academic character, Neuenheim has preserved its small-town atmosphere around the market square, Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage, and Brückenstraße. The Fischerfest embodies this very spirit in festival form: local patriotism, club life, and Heidelberg's cultural flair.
