Christmas Lights on the Rathausplatz in the South of Hamburg
The Harburg district is often underestimated – here, south of the Elbe, live around 165,000 people, and the Christmas market around the neo-Gothic town hall is one of the more prominent Advent traditions outside Hamburg's city center. The Rathausplatz, with its brick architecture and narrow alleys, provides the backdrop that a classic North German Christmas market needs.
What sets the Harburger Weihnachtsmarkt apart from many others is the specially staged light program "Harburg Christmas Lights": A designed light forest of fir trees, stars, and arches frames the stalls. In the evening, when the sun sets early, a cohesive atmosphere of light is created, possessing a quality rare for district festivals.
The highlights are clear and repeated year after year:
On the stalls, you'll find what you expect at a North German Christmas market: mulled wine and punch, bratwurst and almonds, kale with Pinkel sausage, potato pancakes, smoked fish. Local Hamburg and Harburg artisans offer ceramics, woodwork, jewelry, and decorations.
The market is organized by WAGS Hamburg Events GmbH, which also operates other Hamburg district markets. The Hamburg Harburg district campaign supports media coverage.
As in previous years, the organizer plans a five-week market season around the Rathausplatz, featuring the characteristic "Christmas Lights" forest and the usual appearances by Frau Holle on the Rathaus balcony. Exact opening and closing dates will be published on harburger-weihnachtsmarkt.de as soon as the Advent season approaches.
The program follows the established concept: daily tower musician performances Thursdays to Sundays at 6 PM, snowflake actions with Frau Holle, Santa Claus on weekends, a Ferris wheel and carousel, a large advent calendar, and fireworks on the last market day.
The complete daily program for 2026 will be published a few weeks before the market starts on harburger-weihnachtsmarkt.de. The recurring program points:
S3 or S31 to Harburg Rathaus, directly at the market square. By car, parking garages at Lüneburger Tor or in the Phoenix-Center.
Monday to Saturday 11 AM–9:30 PM, Sunday 1 PM–9:30 PM. Totensonntag (Sunday before the 1st Advent) opens only from 5 PM. Closed on December 24th, 25th, and 26th.
