Romantic sea of lights in the Stadtpark by the Kocher
Schwäbisch Hall is one of Württemberg's most beautiful half-timbered towns — located on the Kocher river in Hohenlohe, characterized by centuries of salt production, a rich theatrical and artistic tradition (open-air performances on the steps of St. Michael's Church, Kunsthalle Würth), and an extensive Stadtpark that stretches along the riverbank. The Sommernachtsfest uses this park once a year at the end of summer to transform the town with thousands of lights into a spectacle that is more theater than a town festival.
The centerpiece is the light installation along the Kocher: torches line the river promenade, floating candles drift in the river, trees and bridges are illuminated by colored spotlights. The Stadtpark itself, the Henkersbrücke area, and the paths between Comburg and Kunsthalle Würth become a nocturnal light trail, which thousands of visitors walk through — a relaxed strolling atmosphere, not a sports or crowded festival.
Live bands play at several points in the Stadtpark — mostly acoustic and melodic programs, from singer-songwriters to small jazz combos to classical trios. Haller restaurateurs serve specialties from Hohenlohe at temporary stands: Hällisches Landschwein bratwurst, Hohenlohe wine and sparkling wine, Kaiserschmarrn, and crêpes. The main park is closed to vehicle traffic during the festival.
Schwäbisch Hall, with just under 41,000 inhabitants, is one of the most famous tourist towns in the Hohenlohe district (administratively part of the Schwäbisch Hall district, which shares its name with the town of Hall). The town is known for its open-air performances on the steps of St. Michael's Church in the summer, for the Kunsthalle Würth in the former saltworks, and for the Siedersfest on the Pentecost weekend. The Sommernachtsfest at the end of August is the lyrical summer finale in the town's festival calendar.
The Sommernachtsfest 2026 will take place on Saturday, August 29, 2026, in the Stadtpark of Schwäbisch Hall. The event is organized by the city of Schwäbisch Hall, which has established the format as an annual romantic summer finale in the city's festival calendar.
Thousands of candles, torches, and colored illuminations will accompany visitors along the Kocher through the Stadtpark. Live bands will play mostly acoustic and melodic sets at several stations — singer-songwriters, classical trios, jazz combos. Restaurateurs from Hall will serve specialties of Hohenlohe cuisine and regional wines.
The final hourly program will be published in advance on schwaebischhall.de. Expected are:
