Hamburg's South Reads
While Hamburg's cultural scene traditionally concentrates on the city center, St. Pauli, and Eimsbüttel, SuedLese brings literature to Hamburg's south. For a whole month, every March, around 40 literary events take place in the districts of Wilhelmsburg, Harburg, Heimfeld, Neugraben, and Moorburg – bookstores, libraries, cafés, community cultural centers, and parish halls become venues.
'One Author Per Day'
The series' motto is its program. Every day in March, SuedLese presents at least one voice from German-language or international literature. Established writers alternate with newcomers, poetry sets stand alongside political non-fiction books, and school classes meet authors on-site.
Harburg District and Wilhelmsburg
The focus of events is in the Harburg District and in Hamburg-Mitte/Wilhelmsburg. SuedLese is part of a deliberate strategy to increase the cultural visibility of Hamburg's south – a profile supported by many Hamburg initiatives.
Support from the Zeit-Stiftung Bucerius
2026 marks the 11th edition. This year, the support includes the Zeit-Stiftung Bucerius with a focus on emerging literature. The organizing body is stadtkultur hamburg e.V..
