Open House Day in Hamburg's South

Harburg Culture Day is the day when the cultural life in Hamburg's Harburg district becomes visible. More than 20 cultural institutions from the Harburg district and its surroundings open their doors, offering a free program of exhibitions, guided tours, workshops, and special events. This positions Harburg as a culturally active district – beyond the city center and HafenCity.

Participating Institutions (Selection)

  • Friedrich-Ebert-Halle – The district's concert hall and event venue
  • Helms-Museum (Archaeological Museum Hamburg) – The most important museum for North German prehistory and early history
  • Harburg Theatre – Hamburg's traditional city theatre in the south of Hamburg
  • Kunstleihe Harburg – Lending of artworks for private homes
  • Galleries and off-spaces in the neighborhood
  • Artist studios and workshops

"Art in the Shop Window"

A special feature of the day: artworks are presented in the shop windows of businesses around Harburg's Rathausplatz during the Culture Day. A stroll through the shopping area becomes a small art trail. Thus, Harburg Culture Day explicitly references the connection between culture, urban development, and retail.

Conclusion with Lantern Parade and Fireworks

The day traditionally ends with a lantern parade, led by the Harburg marksmen's guild (Harburger Schützengilde), and a small fireworks display on the Rathausplatz – a fitting finale for the November date and a symbol of the day's community spirit.

Family Program

There are special program items for families: puzzle rallies through several institutions, hands-on activities, child-friendly guided tours. Admission is free everywhere – making the day an easily accessible introduction to Harburg's cultural landscape.

Organizer Harburg Marketing

Harburg Marketing e.V. is the district marketing association for Hamburg's Harburg district and organizes a variety of events throughout the year: the White Dinner, the Culture Day, city festivals, and cultural events. The association is financed by membership fees, sponsorships, and district grants.
