Cultural festival on the trail of Romanticism at Königsstuhl on Rügen
The Königsstuhl and the chalk cliffs of Jasmund are an original setting of German Romanticism: Caspar David Friedrich, the most important painter of this era, drew inspiration from the chalk coast of the island of Rügen for his iconic works. The Romantic Days at the Königsstuhl National Park Centre build upon this historically significant location.
The Romantic Days span three days, offering a varied accompanying programme daily from 11 am to 4 pm. Families and culture enthusiasts immerse themselves in a world of stories, music, and creative encounters. The programme includes guided hikes "In the Footsteps of C. D. Friedrich" with stories about the painter and his wife Caroline, as well as Romantic workshops featuring candle dipping, postcard design, and calligraphy.
Jasmund National Park on Rügen, with its ancient beech forests, is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. The Königsstuhl National Park Centre, located near Sassnitz in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, combines environmental education with cultural dissemination. The Romantic Days demonstrate how closely nature and art history are intertwined at this location.
With hands-on activities, creative workshops, and storytelling formats, the Romantic Days are explicitly aimed at families. Children and adults experience the Romantic era not as dry academic knowledge, but as a lively, sensory programme against the impressive backdrop of the chalk coast.
